2 possibilities for defunct Laughlin, NV., plant

Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 | 8:52 a.m.

As crews take apart the Mohave Generating Station in Laughlin, Nev., there are two developing scenarios for the site's future.

Southern California Edison spokesman Gil Alexander said the plant's owners could retain ownership of the property as a potential site for a new power plant or sell the property.

Edison co-owns the plant with the Salt River Project, NV Energy and the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water.

The coal-fired power plant, which opened in 1971, is in the process of being dismantled at a cost of $30 million.

The plant was unique because it was fed by a 273-mile slurry pipeline connected to the Black Mesa Mine in northeastern Arizona. The Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribes received millions of dollars annually in royalties from coal.
