Letter to the editor:

U.S. does need to cut spending, starting with wars

Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 | 2:01 a.m.

With all the concern being expressed about the cost of providing reasonable access to health care for U.S. citizens, perhaps we ought to be looking at ways to cut other spending.

The war in Iraq has cost more than $700 billion and the one in Afghanistan more than $200 billion, and we have no logical reason to be in either of those places. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security, with its 225,000 employees and annual budget of more than $55 billion, has been trampling on constitutional liberties since its inception and should be disbanded. The FBI should be responsible for all of the functions that it currently performs, with much more effective oversight.

  1. Surprisingly Wallace J. Henkelman did not call for the end of the Department of Defense.

  2. Providing for the defense of the country is a legitament function of the government. Paying for an individual's doctor bills is not. Don't agree? Go read the Constitution.

  3. Wallace is wearing his pink anti war blouse this morning.

Wallace say to do away with Homeland Security and let the FBI take over the Homeland Security duties.

So, I guess Wallace would like to do away with:

    U.S. Coast Guard
    Border Patrol
    Customs
    Border Protection
    Immigration Services
    Immigration enforcement
    TSA
    FEMA
    Secret Service
    And more....

    Well thought out there Wallace...

  4. Its true, we need to stop the wars, the are expensive and only result in destroying good capital. But our welfare state costs us more per year than the entire war in Iraq.

  5. Socialism is just as big of a problem as Americans enemy's / We need to defeat both!

  6. Hmmmmmm....I see the right-wingers are all out in force this morning. Not surprising!

The Dept. of Homeland Security needs to be scaled back.....that's scaled back, not done away with.... That can be done with out compromising national security.

The creation of the Dept of HLS was a politically "feel good" move by both parties, aimed at convincing Americans that the government was going to protect us from another terrorist attack..... Nothing more....The question is, has the Dept. of HLS actually done that?

Yes, thanks to the George W. Bush administration, we have spent approximately a trillion dollars in two Middle East wars that have achieved very little and resulted in the death of some 4000 of our best young military personnel...

I see POWERPLAY has cleaned up his act and has made it possible for fellow posters to actually read his posts.....congratulations POWERPLAY! Your English teacher would be proud...

Gibby, on the other hand should be congratulated for posting a message that wasn't dripping wet with his usual "free market" rant. Of course, he had to have his usual say against socialism...

    Wow! Things are looking up!

  7. El Lobo,

I wrote my masters thesis on the capitalist peace theory. My thesis was dedicated "to all those killed in a GOVERNMENT PROGRAM called war"

I forgot what I wrote my masters thesis on. Maybe it was on "Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever." Or maybe not...

Ha! Ha! Ha! Yep! Stand-up comedy might be the way to go.....

Its been so long ago that I have trouble (1972) remembering what I wrote my master's thesis on....maybe dementia is starting to rear its ugly head?

I think I'll plead the Ronald Reagan excuse....."I don't recall."

  11. Hey El-Lobo: I don't recall' REALLY! I thought that was Bill Clintons line.
