Record high temperature on tap for Las Vegas

City could hit 85 degrees today, matching old record set in 1976

Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 | 6:44 a.m.

Get the record books ready: Las Vegas will warm up to 85 degrees this afternoon, which would make it the warmest Nov. 4 in 33 years.

The National Weather Service says high pressure will continue to bring 80-plus degree weather to the area through Thursday. Then slightly cooler conditions will move in Friday and into the weekend.

A storm system will brush across northern Nevada Sunday, bringing a slight chance of showers as far south as central Nevada, and drop temperature about 10 degrees, forecasters said.

Temperatures were starting out this morning at 55 degrees at 5:56 a.m. at McCarran International Airport. The normal low is 49 degrees and the record low was 26 in 1943.

Forecasters say the temperature will climb to 70 degrees by 9 a.m., to 78 degrees by noon and to 85 degrees by 3 p.m., matching the old record of 85 set in 1976. The normal high for today's date is 71 degrees.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 56 degrees by early Thursday morning, then reach a high on Thursday of 84 degrees, forecasters said.

Afternoon temperatures start cooling off Friday, with the high reaching 80. Then Saturday's high will be 79 and Sunday's will be near 74, the weather service said.
