Former state senator Raymond C. Shaffer dies at 77

CARSON CITY – Former state Sen. Raymond C. Shaffer, who represented North Las Vegas, has died at the age of 77.

The death Saturday was announced at a meeting of the Legislative Committee on Energy today.

Shaffer, a civil engineer, served in the Senate from 1985 to 2003 in 10 regular legislative sessions and three special sessions. A Democrat, he was Senate Majority Whip in the 1991 Legislature.

He was born in 1932 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and earned a degree in civil engineering from Youngstown College. He became a professional code administrator.

He served in the Marine Corps and was a member of the Disabled American War Vets. He was active in a number of local groups including the Boy Scouts, the North Las Vegas Township Democratic Club and the Western States Water Policy Committee.

He was the Democratic nominee for state treasurer but lost in the 1990 election to Republican Bob Seale.

His survivors include his widow, Sharon, and five children.

Funeral services have not been announced.
