Letter to the editor:

Fair and balanced doesn’t mean just telling one side

Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 | 2:03 a.m.

If one needed any more evidence of Fox News’ political bent, this week’s Fox News Sunday show was it.

The love fest between host Chris Wallace and sole guest Rush Limbaugh was proof positive that Fox News’ mission is to bring down anything Democratic and President Barack Obama-related while supporting everything Republican, regardless of how pompous and self-serving it may be.

I wonder when Mr. Wallace will have one of the rival network hosts on for a 30-minute infomercial?

Fair and balanced?

  1. Fox News defends itself against an attack by the Obama administration by explaining that most of their shows aren't real news.

    http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-oc...

  2. Why is Joel Rector watching FOXNEWS.

Joel needs to turn it off

I turn it of when Hollywood starlet spokesperson "tea parties are "about Rednecks "hating a black man"" Janeane Garofalo comes on or Hollywood star spokesperson Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias fascist supporter Sean Penn shows up

  3. I am glad that Joel Rector is watching FoxNews.

All the libs need to watch FoxNews and catch all the errors.

Please give us a daily report what is happening on FoxNews.

  4. And don't forget how biased ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC are towards the left and Obama. This is why I do not watch any of these so called news programs. The pro Obama news is disgusting. Is there any network out there that will just deliver the news without a slant??

  5. is there a bigger weasel in the media than chris wallace...
just another snot nosed spoiled punk who would be a janitor if it weren't for daddy's coat tails...
kinda like johnnie boy i slept with my best friend's/senior staffer's wife then ran to mommy and daddy to fix my boo boo ensign...
    what a couple of wusses!!!

  6. Comment removed by staff. Contained a personal attack.

  7. They are all bought off by one or the other political a$$wipes. What makes you think CBS or ABC is any better than Fox? The Las Vegas Sun chose their political party and twist the facts to make them look good. Fox knows how that goes!

Don't listen to any of those big networks.

  8. The leftwingers just can't stand the one news channel that isn't in the tank for the Obama administration.

  9. When Fox News hires a former Bush speech writer as a news anchor (foxnews.com/story/0,2933,381250,00.html) and when the first page of a Google search for "Fox News" reveals that Hannity and O'Reilly are not categorized as "Opinion" (google.com search term "Fox News"), the only logical reaction to Fox News' cynical "Fair and Balanced" slogan is mockery.

The fact that ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and others don't promote such a slogan is a testament to their more honest approach. Their news may be slanted, but they don't crow hundreds of times a day that their product is "Fair and Balanced".

Back in the day, there were only 4 networks, and nobody could tell which candidate the news anchors supported. These were much more civil days, media-wise - I miss them.

  10. Fox News rocks! hottest chics, fair and balanced for sure!!

  11. Ha, ha, ha... FOX News drives those on the extreme left completely crazy...

The White House and the far left just can't handle the truth...

And the thing that REALLY drives the left wild is that approximately 50% of FOX News viewers are Democrats and Independents.

A national survey shows that 46% of those who watch FOX News "just about every day" are Democrats or Independents as are 50% of those who watch it "several times each week" or more.

Overall, the survey showed that 21% of all American voters watched FOX News every day and 18% watched it several times each week. So, combined, 39% watched the station several times each week or more.

Among Democrats, 17% watched it several times each week or more

Among Independents, 46% the station several times each week or more

And among Republicans, 55% tuned in several times each week or more

The survey indicated that 11% of all American voters watched CNN "just about every day" and 20% watched several times each week or more.

Combined, 31% watched CNN several times each week or more.

For MSNBC, the totals were 10% watched just about every day and 8% watched several times each week. Combined, 18% watched MSNBC several times each week or more.

These data, seen against the backdrop of the recent storm of White House criticism, casts the Administration attacks on FOX News in a different perspective. Could it be that the Obama Administration is concerned about FOX News not because it is "an arm of the Republican Party" but because it is so widely seen among Democrats and Independents?

So, you FOX News haters, just keep up the spinning, twisting and making false statements about FOX News. All you are doing is inviting others to watch FOX News to see if it is as bad as you say. Once they watch it they stay...

  12. Hey Tim-Gordon: (ABC, This week with George Stephanopoulos) Gee i think that guy once worked for President Bill Clinton had his own office in the White House too. (Fair and Balanced YEA RIGHT!) Also about those 4 networks back in the day' What they did and did not do is why FOX NEWS is on the air today pal.

  13. Tim,

ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN etc were all left-of-center (MSNBC has moved even further left with the success of Fox News). The reason Fox News does so well is because it went right of center.

Think about it, all the other networks are left of center but at least 1/3rd of the American population is right. 1/3rd is middle and 1/3rd is left (approximations).

Now if you have 5 news networks with a left of center position you've got 5 networks fighting for 1/3rd of the population. The right of center Fox News gets 1/3rd without having to put up a fight. All the news organizations fight for the middle but Fox news has a leg up because it has no competition on the right.

It was a smart business move on their part. This is exactly what Brian Greenspun is doing with the Sun. He is positioning the paper as a left-of-center alternative to the RJ and hopping more Californians continue to move east.

  14. LarryVegas,

I watch Fox News. I watch Glenn Beck and O'Reilly when I can catch them. I enjoy Shep and Cavuto too.

As is typical of Fox News and devotees like yourself, you make a giant leap in logic by supposing that viewing Fox News means that you believe Fox News. I view all cable and network news with healthy skepticism. I remember something about keeping your enemies closer?

It is clear that if you must convince people that you are "fair and balanced," it's painfully obvious that you are not. In reality, it is the centrists that make up the majority and as you must have input from both sides, Fox News, the only major network/cable outlet in the pocket of the right, will enjoy a higher viewership than any of the other major networks. Beck is an irresistible car wreck for rubbernecks on the cable news highway. I'm definitely guilty. :)

Ahhh but there will always be people out there who trust a guy that says "trust me".

  15. With Fox, the extreme right gets their salve from a bunch of extreme right-wing cowboy commentators. It makes them feel good, and justified in their extreme right views. It's an anti-Obama Love-Fest, and it gets ratings. Go figure.
Conversely, I would not watch MSNBC & Olbermann for their extremism either. ISH.
Fox News & Rush Limbaugh, the new "opium for the masses."

  16. FAUX NEWS
    FLAIR FOR THE UNBALANCED

  17. Mr Rector. An interview with someone, whether you agree with that person or not, is just that - an interview.

I remember when one of the left-leaning media (ABC or CBS or something) interviewed Jeremiah Wright. Does that mean they are in agreement with him? Wait, the same media outlet interviewed Sarah Palin. I know! They agree with both of them.

Good letter, Mr. Rector - please wear your helmet and remember not to vote.

  18. Here's an example of Fair and Balanced. You be the judge ("mouthpiece"??)

    By Sean Hannity

The news that is not White House approved...

    Who Asked You?

GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava's departure from New York's 23rd congressional race is causing an uproar among Democrats.

Scozzafava is a liberal Republican who supports gay marriage, the Democrats' stimulus package and card check legislation. Her membership in the party shows just how broad the GOP is, but that's not what the Democrats are now saying.

They're using her exit from the race to accuse the party of ideological extremism. Now take a look at this exchange between Obama mouthpiece, Valerie Jarrett and ABC's George Stephanopoulos:

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, ABC NEWS: What does it say about where the Republican Party leadership is?

VALERIE JARRETT, WHITE HOUSE SENIOR ADVISER: Well, I think it's becoming more and more extreme and more and more marginalized.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

All right, news flash: Valerie, Scozzafava dropped out of the race because nobody wanted to vote for her. That has nothing to do with GOP extremism and everything to do with the people's preferences. Now you probably don't remember, but that's what elections are all about.

  19. It amazes me that you don't hear the folks on the right banging MSNBC or CBS or CNN for their liberal bias that has been shoved down their throats for years,, Jus ' Sayin..

  20. Hey gmag...

You mention in your last post about FOX News:

"...bunch of extreme right-wing cowboy commentators."

    How large is a bunch?

I can think of maybe two opinion commentators who lean pretty extreme to the right, and I don't recall either one ever wearing cowboy hats, but I could be wrong because I don't spend all my time watching them.

I am a FOX news person, not a FOX opinion commentator viewer. I try to develop my own opinions, based on nothing but facts. So, it's FOX,CNN the WSJ and Sponge Bob Square Pants for me...

  21. Larry,
I sincerely hope that you are not insinuating that Fox News is offering an unbiased, straight down the center delivery of "the News," independent of their ranting commentators.
I hope what you are saying is that you watch Fox News, you KNOW it isn't "Fair & Balanced", but you sift through the right-wing garbage to glean the real facts of the stories being presented.
Otherwise, my friend, you are having a serious problem discerning your right from your left. Some sort of physical dyslexia, perhaps.

  22. gmag,

Yes, you are correct, I sift through the right-wing and the left-wing garbage to glean the real facts of the stories being presented.

Now, remember I did not include the FOX "political commentators." Just the news...

Do you know another major news source that is more "fair and balanced" then FOX News? AND... Please notice that is a big "AND." AND will report the entire news, not just the news that they want you to hear.

I tend to lean to the arm side of me that's holds my can of Bud Light...

  23. CNN.
That will balance your beer hand with your...
    other hand.

  24. LMAO, you liberals are about goofiest since your first party leader was born.

My what short memories you have, Fox News has repeatedly asked Obama and his administration to appear and tell their side and to please correct misconceptions and to publicly speak the truth. This includes Chris Wallace, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, and Fox and Friends and Obama and clan have refused to appear or speak the truth.

It is well known that Obama is self destructing and he is implementing a pathway of destruction for America. He has been in office almost a year and he has produce nothing useful or meaningful to America. What he has done is lied to America when he crammed the stimulus down our throats, he lied and he knows he is a lair.

He had trust when voted into office, he earned where he is today, he lied to us and he lost our trust. Obama's only goal is to destroy America and turn us into a Marxist county and we're not going to enable his preferred lifestyle choices and take away my right to freedom and free choice.

  25. its2hot:

I have news for you. The majority of Americans
still trust President Obama. That was said on
Fox two nights ago. Evan Fox can't lie about that.

  26. teamster-the majority of Americans are stupid. They have gone through the government forced indoctrination camps (public schools) and been taught that freedom is bad and individualism is bad and that we must bow down and kiss the rear of the messiah to be good Americans. Like most Americans, you teamster are a total fool. I am an individual first. I am much more important that the collective.

  27. I hope Fox stays on for a long time. Americans
need to know what crazy people look like.

  28. Principles are more important than political parties except when comes to the extreme left.

Well, maybe extremists from all political parties and religions are all filled with hate for those with different views then their own...

  29. jlb101:

You have an unrealistic viewpoint on life. We
are all in this life together.
Start thinking about your fellow man instead
    of yourself.

  30. LarryVegas:

Different principles are what seperates Left
from Right. You seem to have a problem with
thoes on the extreme Left. The people I know
on the extreme Left are not filled with hate.

  31. teamster:

I guess I just have problems with extremists.

Politics, religion and some sports have extremists and fanatics on their fringes. And in my experience, they are more often filled with hate then love.

Some of the good people who post here, in my opinion, are on the fringes of both the Right and the Left. These people are the name callers and the hate mongers who would rather destroy someone then agreeing to disagree on a topic.
