Letter to the editor:

Why would anyone vote against Reid?

Saturday, May 30, 2009 | 2:02 a.m.

Anyone who knows anything about Nevada knows that you have to have “juice”. And anyone who would vote out Harry Reid, our state’s senior senator and Senate majority leader, doesn’t know what he is talking about.

People won’t vote him out of office unless they want Yucca Mountain and nuclear waste storage here. Nevadans won’t vote against him if they care about the generous stimulus package, which not only creates jobs but provides funding for our state and our public schools.

Who would be crazy enough to vote out a man like Sen. Harry Reid, who is close to our president and who has done so much for our state and would be in a position to continue do so? No one in his right mind, that’s who.

Discussion: 33 comments so far…

  1. The writer points out two very clear points.

    1) The only significant thing that Reid has done for Nevada is trying to stop the nuclear waste site. The stimulus package is really an arugment against Reid. Nevada is near the bottom of list of stimulus spending per capita. So, it was dumb to use that as a Reid success story.

    2) The Democrat party as a whole is for storing nuclear waste at Nevada. For like the writer says, without Reid they would be pushing waste on to Nevadans.

Reid has not use his power to help Nevada that much.

Again, we are near bottom of list for stimulus fund spending on a per capita basis.

We are at near bottom of the list of getting Nevadan federal tax money return to the state on a per capita basis.

Again, why should we vote for Reid?

Who is really taking care of?

He has family members who are making millions in lobbying fees for lobbying firms in DC.

It is nice to see that he is a family man.

  2. Anyone who knows anything about Nevada knows that you have to have "juice".

When the "juice" is wrongly directed and results in inept laws like the ineffective Stimulus package you have to cut them loose.

Nevada got way less then its fair share in stimulus and what it did get had too many strings attached

As Mamie Glorioso must know Harry Reid failed to change the Yucca law - the NWPA, and allowed for spending $198 million for the NRC LA review and approval. Yucca will be back when Obama has no use for Harry.

Harry Reid continues to put the likes of Chris Dodd in Senate leadership roles.

  3. For real?

  4. I will vote against Reid. Maimie's "juice" argument is lame. Reid is an embarassment to Nevada.

  5. Harry was elected because of Yucca mountain.

That was 1986. Now I ask, what has he done lately?

We came up billions short on the stimulus, he said nearly nothing when President Obama told people not to go to Vegas, I think his record speaks for itself.

Juice? I would say he has none.

  6. Obama's first 100 stimulus projects in the first 100 days, number in Nevada, ZERO. Real juice.

Harry Reid has done more with national policy to ruin Nevada than anyone in the country. From an energy plan that drive transportation costs through the roof, to a spending plan that sent the nations money to the non working masses in the largest cities, harry Reid has been a disaster.

  7. If nevada got more money then there would be those that would say our children will have to pay for this, or Oh No taxes are coming!
It seems to me that some people want their cake and to eat it also.
Some of the poster's here have said in the past we were spending to much then later, We are not getting a fair share.
Maybe you are getting a fair share and you just don't know it Neveda has no state Individual Income tax so how is it that they are entitled to more.

  8. With regard to Reid and the stimulus, please recognize the stimulus money is for maybe 2 years, after that it will be uncertain if there is any economic growth caused. Reid is strangling Yucca. That impacts a few hundred jobs. Had Reid embraced Yucca, NV could have dictated financial and safety assurance terms that would have provided THOUSANDS of jobs for many decades, and all with any concerns of safety and oversight accounted for however NV would want. And for those who think it unsafe, read the license application and make an informed opinion. I'll be voting for Shelley Berkley; at least she took the high road and supports a fair trial of the science. I can't support Reid anymore.

  9. Wow! I see the "I hate Harry" crowd is out in force...

I have a couple questions for all those out there who want to see Harry defeated in his bid for relection to the Senate in 2010.

    (1) Who is out there that may be able to replace Harry in the Senate & yet be able to have the president's ear the way Harry has?

Right now, the GOP in Nevada has NO viable candidate to oppose Harry. Maybe our present governor will decide to run against the "Senator from Searchlight?" Good luck there.... Gibbons is about as popular as a case of malaria...

Harry is the Senate majority leader and is the number #1 man in the Senate because his party, the Democrats, are in control of the Senate. That gives Harry a great deal of clout.

    (2) If Harry loses his bit for relection to a Republican, what kind of clout/power will that person have in the Senate if the Democrats maintain control of the Senate? Slim or none? I think slim left town last week...

    (3) Even if the Democrats lose control of the Senate (that's highly unlikely...) how much clout would a new Republican senator from Nevada actually have....? I wonder what important committee the new GOP senator would be assigned to?

I see the usual pro Yucca crowd is out in force. That's not surprising....

Yep, that's what this state needs....a full blown nuclear waste dump less than 100 miles from this state's largest city. There's NO scientific proof that the Yucca dump site is safe and will remain safe for the next 10,000 years.

Of course, I can clearly understand all of you right-wingers who measure everything in dollars & cents.....the money we might (no guarantee...) get from allowing the Yucca site to become a national depositary for this country's nuclear waste is hard to turn down...even if its only a few billion dollars....

Hmmmmm....aren't some of you pro Yucca backers the same people who are always saying that we need to get the government off our backs? Probably not!

  10. I am a republican who voted for Reid back in 2004 just because I thought he had a chance to become senate Majority leader. Well I will never make that mistake again. He has done nothing for this state. Harry reid is an idiot.

  11. casinokid: You might have a little more credability if you learned how to spell N-E-V-A-D-A!

When you spend more than you bring in...that's a problem even if the services are valuable. And, even if we had state income tax I doubt we would be in the clear right now as the legislature would find new ways to spend instead of save leaving us in the same boat. Maybe worse given their track record.

  12. indythinker: You might have a little more credibility if you learned how to spell C-R-E-D-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y!

  13. I guess I'm not in right mind because I'm not voting for "Hands Up Harry".

I'd encourage everyone else to look hard at any potential rivals. (A barking do will do)

    Harry has to go.....

  14. SOOOOOOO sorry...I guess knowing how to spell the "state" I live in is more important to me than using the wrong vowel once in a while. NEVEDA? Really?

  15. El Lobo and Mamie. Since you asked -

    1. "to have the president's ear" means they collaborate on policies which increase the size of the federal government, increase government spending, encroach on individual rights, dictate policy to corporations, and on and on.

I would much prefer a senator who opposes the president on these "negative impact" policies. What good is a lot of power if it's not used wisely and for the good of the people?

    2. Clout is not what it's about. The best senator is the one who has the country's best interest in mind. It's not a competition between states. Whatever money a senator is able to direct to his own state needs to be paid for by all the citizens of the U.S.

Think about it. Let's say Harry is able to route a hugely disproportionate portion of the "stimulus" money to Nevada - like 90% of it! You'd consider him hugely successful. Then your company transfers you to Indiana. Then what will you think of Harry?

    3. Again, clout. See #2 above.

    4. I'm not pro Yucca. I'm pro wherever-is-the-best-place. Harry needs to show the country that there is a better place for nuke waste, then push for it. Harry's constant "not here, not here" isn't going to get the job done. He needs to show a better plan. If Yucca is actually the best place, that's where it will end up.

  16. Well said.

  17. To those that I may have offended by mispelling Nevada I do apologize. I did not do this with malicious intentions, With that said Where is the entitlements.

  18. We are in more trouble than most or us have any idea of yet, and Harry Reid is at the center of a lot if it. All the assumptions that built modern Nevada have been thrown out the window by the democrats and their chief arbiter Harry Reid. Let's kick him out and let him get one of his $10.00 an hour "green jobs" that have cost $240,000 a piece so far.

I am a Nevadan because I live here now.

But I am an American by birth.

There are over 140 sites across the United States where Nuclear waste materials are now stored; most are next to very large population centers. In fact, several of them are near places I once lived. You know what? These materials would be more safely stored inside Yucca Mountain. It's a great place for it.

If a terrorist ever attacks a nuclear power plant the rest of the country will wake up screaming about that fact as well.

What would happen if the rest of the Unites States took to heart Harry Reid's treatment of them?

We had 45 million visitors in 2007, a few percentage points drop recently and our whole economy shudders. They didn't do that on purpose. Yet.

What if people treated Nevada as a pariah like say, our elected officials did to Miss Nevada a few years ago for suggesting that Nevada do its part in helping solve the nuclear waste storage problem?

Bob Loux the un-indicted Nevada official in charge of fighting the proposal (and writing his own pay schedule along the way) treated this young lady like a public enemy. Yet she was right!

    Go away Harry.

    I support our troops.

    I support Gen. Petreus.

I support the scientists that worked at Science Applications International and studied Yucca Mountain and pronounced it safe.

    I support nuclear power.

I support truckers making a living using diesel trucks to deliver inexpensive goods from wherever to wherever needed.

I support automobile dealers and American auto manufacturers.

I support our freedom to drive cars to go where we want to when we want to..

You are to blame for a lot of the mess we are in now Mr. Reid. And you know what?

The war, was not lost. Despite your pronouncements.

  19. Good job casinokid...good luck on obtaining those entitlements!

  20. casinokid,

"With that said Where is the entitlements."

It's where ARE the entitlements. Good luck. Looks like you'll need them!

  21. Re: Mamie Glorioso

Why would anyone vote FOR Harry? VOTE HARRY OUT!

  22. Why would anyone WANT nuc waste in their state? What good is a job if mass death is the outcome?
But I do have a news flash for EVERYONE-- nothing ever changes. No matter who is in office. So-- push yourself away from the computer..go outside and enjoy the day and your family. All this stuff is out of our control. Live your life and don't worry about it-

  23. Unless the Nevada Republican Party (which is in ruins right now) can come up with a fantastic candidate (which they don't have) AND are willing to risk 5 Million Bucks (or more, which they don't have) - this is a ridiculous argument at best!

The Nevada Republican Party can't even afford to keep their Clark County, Las Vegas office open - who do you people think you're fooling?

Harry Reid may have another close race, but he will be re-elected and continue to be the Senior Senator from Nevada!

Nevada is fortunate to have Harry serving as the Senate Majority Leader!

  24. Based upon the statistics...if you believe them, the Republican party doesn't even need a fantastic candidate to win against Reid.

Reid's days should be numbered and he should be soundly defeated if the Republicans or a viable Independent come forward to challenge him.

Standing on the Obama team doesn't necessarily make Reid a shoe-in nor does his political position guarantee Nevada anything more than what Nevada has seen from him thus far. He's not Obama's golden boy. Obama has the votes he needs without Reid.

Nevada has an opportunity to send Congress a message by putting someone in Reid's Senate seat who is willing to go against the grain and stand up for our Constitutional Freedoms that are rapidly being eroded by this Administration and Reid's voting record.

  25. lots of heat here - save it for the winter!

  26. Nuclear testing was conducted in Nevada for years and you are worried about Yucca? That's an oxymoron. There are things floating in my tap water that concern me more than Yucca.

  27. I, as every American that can take care of themselves should vote Harry Reid out of office. I disagree with Harry and I want the government to stay out of my life. I appreciate this editorial but my views completely differ from yours and I want him out. Let me guess - you are either union or work for the government. Go ahead and vote for Harry - my vote will cancel yours out.

  28. People better figure out that Yucca Mt. is the Golden Goose! The site is perfect for storage & even better to put 4 or 5 plants in to use up the energy potential of the fuel rods. We would be able to not only get paid to take/store the "waste" but then produce an enormous amount of power while being protected by the military. Waste, from our nuclear subs, has been transported & stored for over 50 years in southern Idaho. Being afraid of the waste is rather "childish" as people are sure it can/will blow up or a cannister may leak & contaminate the already contaminated ground water.

  29. For what ever its worth.....Harry Reid will be reelected in 2010. Its very simple. Harry has done a great deal for Nevada as our Senator and the voters will reelect him. The last time Harry ran for reelection, (2004) he carried over 65% of the votes cast....He did that despite the fact that Bush won relection and Nevada came in "red." Nevada is NOW a "blue" state.

Polls show (especially those conducted by the Review Journal....no surprise there....) that Harry is in big trouble with Nevada voters. I agree that his current popularity is suffering at this point in time, but who in the world do the Republicans have that can defeat Harry?

Maybe our very popular current governor will decided to run against Harry? Gibbons has been a great leader as our governor......Right? He's about as popular as a case of malaria...

I get a kick out of such posters as larry5, TGB and metman. They have convinced themselves that Harry will lose come 2010 but they have as yet to come up with the name of the person who can defeat Harry....Gibbons, Donald Dick......maybe Mickey Mouse?

The GOP is hurting big time in not only Nevada but through out the country. It's currently a party run by rich old white men who are completely out of touch with the average American. This last election clearly showed that very thing...

If the economy improves as we head toward 2010, and the two wars that the Democrats inherited from the GOP starts to wind down, look for a repeat of 2008 at the polls....pretty simple stuff to understand.

Obama needs Harry to continue as the majority leader in the Senate in order to get his program enacted......that's what Obama's recent visit to Las Vegas was all about. Approximately 2 million dollars was raised in one afternoon for Harry's reelection campaign....

Money wins elections and Harry looks as if he going to have plenty of the green stuff as he prepares for 2010....

As far as the future of Yucca Mt. as the nation's dump site....it's history....With Obama living in the White House and Harry in line to be reelected to his fifth term in the Senate, don't hold your breath and don't start counting the few pennies that the feds will throw the state of Nevada if Yucca becomes the nation's waste depository....

  30. El Lobo obviously is young. He doesn't remember the Carter years. He is about to find out how very simple it is indeed.

Inflation and interest rates, both topping 18%.
    SEE:

    Gas lines.

Anger and "a sense of hopelessness".

People have to relearn things over and over. We elect democrats, they do what they do, and we learn--for a time--not to let them loose.

It's very simple, as El Lobo said, just not as he thinks it is...the certainty of what is coming is what will change the leadership in the Senate.

    Watch and see.

  31. Nevada doesnt mean a thing to Hairless Harry at this point, its all about whos back needs the scatching. If anything tells us in politics, it is, to heck with the people, they do not know what they want, so I will do what I think is correct, and the politicians will always do for the group(s) that will do for them...check this out this is typical Reid....

Cornyn balked at a quick vote on Clinton, expressing dissatisfaction with the steps she has promised to guard against potential conflicts of interest involving foreign donations to the foundation her husband, former President Bill Clinton, set up.
"You have a unique circumstance. . . . Two of the most powerful people in America happen to be married to each other. A former president who's got this foundation and accepting huge contributions from foreign nationals and foreign countries happens to be married to the person who will be the chief diplomat for the United States," Cornyn said Tuesday. "I think it needs some more work to have greater transparency. If it doesn't get handled now, it probably won't get handled. So it's important to talk about it now."
Early Tuesday, Cornyn spokesman Kevin McLaughlin said Cornyn was "keeping all of his options on the table," including a possible filibuster.
That irked Clinton's home-state colleague, Sen. Charles E. Schumer , D-N.Y. "At most, he'll hold it off for two days," Schumer said. "What's the point? We've already gone through the process."
Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev., later secured a unanimous consent agreement to vote on Clinton's nomination Wednesday.

  32. TBG re: "... stand up for our Constitutional Freedoms that are rapidly being eroded by this Administration and Reid's voting record"

Would you be so kind as to (a) define what you mean by "Constitutional Freedoms" and then, (b) list any or all of the ones you think have been "eroded" since Obama took office.

And then please list any or all of the ones the Bush administration "eroded" (or gave us, your choice).

    I've got a few minutes.

  33. I wish those who tell us that Reid has done a lot for Nevada would list a handful of those things.

El Lobo. You stated, "I get a kick out of such posters as larry5, TGB and metman. They have convinced themselves that Harry will lose come 2010."

Please point out in my post where I stated Reid will lose. If you can't, it's reasonable to assume everything you post is a fabrication.
