LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Public transportation not what it used to be

How I long for the good old days of travel to Southern California. Then, I could start by parking my car in the Plaza garage, where I would board the Santa Fe to Los Angeles.

It was my choice whether to enjoy a meal in the diner en route, relax in the club car, or doze in the parlor while gazing out the window. The conductor came to me for ticket verification and those handling the luggage were helpful. Again by rail, it was via the “Big Red Car” to the town or city of choice, whether Hollywood, Venice/Ocean Park or even Huntington Beach; with city bus to my final destination. Yes, a little slow, but easy!

Compare this with my expectations for an upcoming overnighter to Long Beach. Demand a AAA “Trip Ticket” to guide my car through the morass of crowded and frightful freeways; or suffer the hassles and delays of air travel to and from an airport, and who knows how to get from there to my destination?

I do not need the projected high-speed maglev; only a safe, comfortable, relaxing railroad ride taking a reasonable time at an affordable cost.
