Boulder City Candidates

Jim Reed

Name: Jim Reed

Age: 44

Campaign Web site: None

Party: Democrat

Occupation: Retired Boulder City police sergeant

Education: Extensive education and training in the areas of leadership, command and supervision.

Time in Nevada: More than 20 years

Time in Boulder City: 14 years

Most important issues: I believe that the negative financial situation the city is in did not happen overnight or over the last few months. It took several years of mismanagement, unaccountability and irresponsibility to achieve this situation, and it will take quite a while to get out. It is time to review how the city got here, hold accountable those who should have seen it coming or contributed to it, and move forward to fix it. It is my opinion that the city should hire a proven municipal consultant to examine our financial situation and make recommendations for us to follow to get the city financially secure again.

Qualifications for job: To be quite frank, as a politician, I am not qualified for this position. I have spent my 20 years as a city employee trying to make the city a safer place to live, work and play. I have personally brought between $250,000 and $500,000 of grant funding to the city for various public safety projects over the years. I was responsible for bringing the Department of Motor Vehicle services to the city one day per week so our citizens would not have to drive into the Las Vegas Valley to renew their vehicle registrations and driver’s licenses. I increased the number of school crossing guards on the roadways around our schools to help ensure our children make it to and from school safely. I did these things by being on the front lines as a hands-on, hard-working leader. Those in the community who know me know that I am a blunt, no-nonsense problem-solver who has an extensive record of getting the job done effectively with the resources available. Perhaps it is time to elect a candidate who may not be the best politician but is the best at getting the job done.

What sets candidate apart: Being a recently retired 20-year employee of the city has provided me with the unique position of being able to see the city from both the filtered resident viewpoint and the reality employee viewpoint. I have personally seen, as an employee, what mismanagement, accountability and irresponsibility have done to the city and the morale of its employees. This needs to stop. As a member of the council, I can bring my 20 years of city employee insight to bear on current issues and help resolve them. Boulder City is a fantastic place to live, work and play. With the right management and leadership team in place, it can be even better.
