CARSON CITY – Sen. Terry Care, the assistant majority leader, wants to let local governments decide if they want to increase taxes.
“Let the county commissioners take the heat,” says Care, D-Las Vegas, who has introduced a bill to permit local governments to raise taxes instead of coming to the Legislature.
The 2007 Legislature dealt with a number of requests from local governments asking to be given permission to raise taxes.
Senate Bill 264 would authorize local governments to impose a property tax, a sales and use tax, a room tax, a fuel tax and a tax on the transfer of real property.
The bill was introduced on the final day that individual introductions are allowed in the Legislature. There were other tax bills.
Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, sponsored a bill to give a property tax credit to some senior citizens and disabled who own and occupy a single-family home.
Under Senate Bill 282, the assessed value of the home could not exceed $200,000; the owner must have lived in it for at least six months and have an income of less than $24,016.
Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, sponsored a bill to give a tax credit to certain businesses that donate money to private schools.
Sen. Mike Schneider, D-Las Vegas, wants to provide a partial abatement of the property tax on some residential rental dwellings.
All of the tax bills were referred to the Senate Taxation Committee for study.

With all the hair-brained schemes coming out of Henderson involving toxic remediation plots, foolish museums, and failed golf course developments, it's obvious that the Democrats are determined to drive every homeowner out of Nevada. And I'm a Democrat....
