Bill Hankins, the guardian for former Findlay College Prep forward Victor Rudd, said Friday that he and Rudd are still interested in UNLV and that the Rebels have a “60-40” chance at getting Rudd.
Rudd, a senior, left the Pilots a week ago at the end of a weeklong suspension by Findlay coach Mike Peck.
Hankins, who has a thriving Southern California real estate business, had been unavailable for comment until Friday.
“We’re very, very, very much interested in UNLV,” Hankins said. “We like the coach, we like the school and we like the system.”
Hankins is the father of Willie Hankins, who left Findlay a month ago.
“We’re happy,” said the elder Hankins, who lives in the San Fernando Valley area north of Los Angeles. “Everything is fine. Victor’s fine, Willie’s fine and I’m fine.
“We appreciate the opportunity Findlay gave us. Everyone will learn from it and it will all work out.”
UNLV coach Lon Kruger can only comment on whether he and his staff are recruiting a prospect, and Kruger said Friday night that he will continue to follow Rudd.
Arizona, Gonzaga, Marquette, Memphis and the Rebels are all among a list of about 10 programs in which Rudd has expressed interested.
“We like what they got going over there,” Hankins said of the Rebels. “We like their style of play and might want to help them get to the next level.”
Hankins said he and Rudd want to focus on the future and not dwell on what happened at Findlay.
Hankins said Rudd will complete his high school academic requirements and graduate through an independent studies program.
Rudd averaged 16.6 points, second to guard Avery Bradley’s 19, in 28 games for the Pilots and grabbed a team-high 8.6 rebounds a game.
The Pilots are 30-0 and will participate in the National High School Invitational in North Bethesda, Md., in early April.

This is a very good development. Maybe the kid hasn't been soured by whatever went down.
Peck has provided few details over what happened. Is Rudd responsible for the departure or did Peck over-react to a minor disciplinary matter and cause the parting of ways himself?
I think what happened, happened, and both parties are moving on in the best interest of everyone.
He should hope that the Rebels are 60/40 in even wanting him on the squad. Kruger is quick to get rid of problems and I can't see that staff putting forth the effort to bring a problem in. Obviously, we don't know exactly what went down other than it wasn't related to academics and he was asked to apologize to the team, which he refused to do.
He's a brilliant basketball player, but do the Rebels need a problem in the locker room, particularly with the departure of what leadership we did have. Someone always steps into that role, but it's not always obvious who will.
There are plenty of good kids that can play ball and be good teammates. I would rather see us spend the time and energy on one of those guys.
Take it easy, vaughnet. Don't write the kid off yet when we're not a hundred percent on what went down.
Rob has a much better idea on the situation. Is this kid a good fit for UNLV, Rob or could he become a discipline problem for Kruger?
