Child shooting

The mother of a 10-year-old North Las Vegas boy who shot a 7-year-old girl last month turned herself in to police this morning, charged with child neglect and endangerment.

Karen Wachner, 41, faces one count of child endangerment with substantial bodily harm, one count of child neglect and one count of reckless endangerment, police said.

Her husband, 39-year-old David Wachner, was arrested Monday and taken to the Clark County Detention Center on the same charges, detention center records said.

North Las Vegas Police went to a home in the 500 block of Blackbird Knoll Court about 8:28 a.m. May 21, responding to a call that a child had been shot. They found that the girl had been taken to Mountain View Hospital by a relative, police said.

The girl survived a shot in the face with a pistol belonging to his mother and father, police records said.

The boy suspected in the shooting was found at a nearby elementary school, said Sgt. Tim Bedwell, spokesman for the North Las Vegas Police Department.

Police investigated the case and sent it to the Clark County District Attorney's Office, where arrest warrants were issued Monday for the mother and the father, who are both from North Las Vegas.

The mother and father of the 10-year-old boy were not at home at the time. Police investigators found a .38-caliber pistol, a .27-caliber rifle, a .22-caliber rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun at the residence, a criminal complaint said.

  1. So, what I understand from this article is that the 10 year old boy was unsupervised while the parents were who knows where! Guessing the boy took one of the unlocked guns out of an unlocked drawer and went to the neighbor's house or whatever and played with the gun as if it were a toy? Ridiculous. Metro better be taking all those guns out of that residence. People like that have no business owning guns.

  2. You might be surprised to know that there is no law in Clark County preventing parents from leaving children alone, no matter how young. Legally, you can leave your clean, fed, 1 month old infant in a crib, home alone. I was floored when I discovered this. I was reporting a 6 year old home alone and the police told me it's not illegal.

  3. A good lawyer will get them out of this nor problem.

  4. I still think something should have been done about the mother of the kid who got shot who knew the boy had a gun and didn't do anything about it except to tell him to take it home!!???? People are so weird!

  5. That disgusts me, henderson.

  6. UNLVgirl, that is exactly what I was thinking.

  7. It is not illegal to own guns.

It is morally and ethically wrong to leave them where children can play with them.

It isn't the guns that are the problem, it is irresponsible people.

  8. Very true, geezelouise (love the screen name, BTW)

Guns can't and don't go off by themselves....

  9. jspence07 first and formost both parents work, and being that he was waiting for the bus to go to school, he was not left alone that long. As far as the little girl's mother who saw him bring the gun in her house and did nothing to remove the gun from him but told him to take it home and then let her daughter walk out of the house with him is the one who needs to be brought up on charges at least one count of child endangerment and one count of reckless endangerment. She also should be brought up on Child neglect, I am sorry but she is just as much responsible, granted the Wachner's should have locked the guns up in a secure safe or maybe even a locked bedroom, but to let him come in to your home and not take the gun away from him is just plain stupid. If your going to charge the 2 you should charge the mother of the little girl also. When a family is trying to make ends meet especially in todays economy you have to have both parents working, and sometimes that means the child is left alone for a little while. I'm a single mother and when my kids were growing up they were considered latchkey kids, not that I liked it but it was necessary. So you don't know what was going on. Sounds like some one is trying to make a name for themselves, is it an election year?

  10. I hope that you people don't ever have to live through something like this. This gun was not left out in the open for the child to take. Granted, it was not locked up but hidden just the same. These parents are good parents. They have three great children, who respect and love them. I agree with cfb143 who said that in this economy both parents do have to work. The girl's mother took the gun and should have kept it until she was able to contact the boy's parents. Or she could have called the police before allowing her child to leave with the boy to put the gun back. Accidents happen. It's too bad the prosecuting attorney is running for office this year and needs to score points. I am sure there are bigger issues in Las Vegas to deal with than this issue.

  11. If we were all graded on the number of times we screw up - we would all fail. Hind sight is always 20/20. David and Karen Wachner are loving parents of three children. One just graduated from high school, one is a member of the Jr. NHS, the third child is the one involved in the tragic accident. Thank GOD it was not a fatal one. David and Karen are good parents, good neighbors, good friends, they are very caring. They have helped family and friend, when they fell on hard times, and will probably continue to do so. It is time for love to take over. To turn the other cheek. Both parties have suffered enough, it is time to let the children - to both be children and friends again. It is time to bring the mountain down to the mole hill, and let everyone return to everyday living. Will they ever be able to forget that day? (NO!) They will suffer inwardly for the rest of their lives. Now is the time for compassion, may God be with both families.

Citizens of Las Vegas, do not pass judgement, until you have walked in their shoes. Make sure you have all of your facts before making such critical statements against this couple. They have done a great job raising their family.
