Matt Jenkins resigned Tuesday as football coach at Desert Oasis High and is moving to North Carolina, where his wife is helping open a family business.

The season is 10 weeks away and Jenkins said leaving his team was a tough decision.

“The weird part about this is the timing,” Jenkins said. “The timing sucks. But sometimes in life you can’t control the timing. I love the players at the school. It was emotionally telling them. I broke down after two minutes.”

Jenkins coached at Canyon Springs for three years and led the Pioneers to the Northeast Division crown and Sunrise Regional semifinals in 2007. He opened Desert Oasis last year and led the Diamondbacks to a 3-6 record in their inaugural season.

Jenkins said he will continue coaching in the Charlotte area.

“I have two little (children) at home, and at the end of the day, I have to look them in the eyes and say I did what was best for them,” he said.
