Cirque to get star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Thursday, June 18, 2009 | 6:43 p.m.

Two days after its 25th anniversary and an attempt to regain a world record, Cirque du Soleil received word it will have a permanent place in Hollywood.

The circus troupe and its founder, Guy Laliberte, have been selected as one of 28 recipients to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce selected Cirque and Laliberte as a live performance/theater recipient for 2010. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli was also chosen in the category.

Other 2010 recipients include Ringo Starr, Russell Crowe, Van Morrison and ZZ Top. The 28 honorees were chosen from a pool of more than 200 nominations, the Hollywood Walk of Fame Committee said.

Dates have not been announced for the star unveilings.

Cirque celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first performance Tuesday with an attempt to break the Guinness world record for the most people simultaneously walking on stilts -- a record it set in 2004. The organization has grown from 20 performers in 1984 to 4,000 employees and 19 shows in 2009, six of which are based in Las Vegas.
