Gibbons names Reno man as adjutant general

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 | 6:33 p.m.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons named Brigadier General William R. Burks, a Reno man who has been in the National Guard since 1978, as adjutant general.

Burks replaces Cynthia Kirkland as leader of the 3,000 members of the Nevada Army and Air National Guard.

Burks, who has been assistant adjutant general for the Air National Guard in Nevada, will earn a state salary of $117,030 in addition to the pay he receives from the military while on duty.

In making the appointment, Gibbons said, "Not only has he been a Nevada guardsman since the day he enlisted, but he has seen combat, is a decorated war hero and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross."

Burks is a licensed certified public accountant.

The law states the adjutant general must be in the guard for at least six years. He will serve at the governor’s top military adviser.
