Stavros Anthony's 10-vote margin of victory in the Las Vegas City Council's Ward 4 race withstood a challenge from opponent Glenn Trowbridge today, as a recount confirmed the election's outcome.

City spokesman Jace Radke said there was no change in the tally after mail ballots from four precincts of Trowbridge's choosing and every machine ballot cast in the race were recounted this afternoon. Trowbridge, Las Vegas Planning Commission Chairman, paid the city $800 to conduct the recount.

Anthony, a Metro Police captain and two-term member of the Nevada Higher Education System's Board of Regents, won the June 2 general election with 3,309 votes to Trowbridge's 3,299, a difference of 0.16 percent.

Anthony will be sworn in at Wednesday's City Council meeting at 9 a.m.

"I'm very excited," Anthony said. "I've been studying the agenda for Wednesday's meeting all weekend and I'm looking forward to being sworn in, taking the seat and representing the residents of Ward 4 and continuing to work to make Las Vegas a great place."

Anthony said he was confident that the recount wouldn't change the outcome of the race.

"I was not so much nervous — just waiting for the official outcome. You go by history, you go by the people who run elections, and historically, recounts don't have much impact on the outcome of elections. I have a lot of faith in the Election Department — they do great work. So it was mainly just about waiting for the official outcome."

Trowbridge couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

A second recount, involving the Henderson mayoral race, is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. City Councilman Steve Kirk, who lost to fellow Councilman Andy Hafen by 45 votes in the June 2 race, has requested a recount of mail ballots from eight Henderson precincts. The recount is expected to last two to three hours, City Clerk Monica Simmons said.

Hafen is scheduled to be sworn in Tuesday night at 6:30.

  1. The firemen are going to be sick. They supported the other guy. They spent union dues and worked to keep their pay intact and their benefits flowing. Oops.

  2. Hey Neiman1:
Don't forget the union dues and effort expended by the PPA on Trowbridge. I wonder if Chris Collins is sitting with the Mayor calculating how much it will cost to contest the vote since they simply can't concede defeat (see quotes in Friday's RJ).

  3. A decision has been made - in a sense democracy has survived all the conspiracy theories and the many and diverse attempts of men to thwart it. This virtual tie has been awarded and now we shall see how these clowns perform. They both have jobs and no one is starving and dying. Isn't it a wonderful world!

  4. I just can't get over the fact that here in Clark County we have so many government employees getting elected to offices that have a direct bearing on how their very jobs exist and are funded. The other occupation of those that keep getting elected are realtors/land use consultants.
