LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Legislature should have heeded Gibbons

Saturday, June 13, 2009 | 2:02 a.m.

The Horsford/Buckley package of huge tax increases will do major damage to the fragile Nevada economy.

First, it will take huge sums of money from the private sector, leaving citizens with less money to spend on goods and services, which support jobs and bring in taxes. (Businesses do not pay taxes — they collect tax money from their customers and give it to the state.)

Second, with higher taxes and less consumer spending, more businesses will have to lay off more employees or simply close their doors, putting still more people out of work.

Third, with more people out of work there will be more foreclosures.

All Nevada residents will suffer in a longer and deeper recession.

State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley and the 2009 Legislature have failed Economics 101, while Gov. Jim Gibbons understood the economics and did his best to do the right thing for the citizens of Nevada.

  1. You have to be kidding..... :Jim Gibbons has done the best for our State: BULL! Gibbons is out for himself and no one else... Don't let the wolf fool you.....

  2. how typical. this guy lives in a $400,000 house of 2700 ft in Minden. It's OK with him if the Nevada schools get cut 39%, among other Gibbons cuts. He's got his. what a pig.

  3. Kiview. You are the pig. Gibbs never suggested cutting schools 39%. His budget called for reducing K-12 by about 3%... not bad when tax revenue is down 40%. But an oinker like you would never understand that. As for Higher Ed... THEIR budget would have been cut 39%. Tough luck, all they do at UNLV is spit out students NOT ready for the real world. SHUT DOWN UNLV. A waste of time and money, but then what would Senator Horsford's wife, the UNLV professor (I am sure she earned it. NOT.) do for a job? I guess she could help dig the $70 million dollar hole at F street.

  4. "Tough luck, all they do at UNLV is spit out students NOT ready for the real world. SHUT DOWN UNLV."

You have statistics, evidence, or proof? Hard facts, objective facts...or just more of the same BS like our governor (who actually said UNLV could try to compete for private money on the same level as Harvard University).

UNLV may not be a top-flight college on par with the elites. But it's not clown college. So stop belittling the tens of thousands of alumni (like me) who got a solid education and then entered the workforce, both public and private sector.
