Gibbons won’t bring back state’s adjutant general

Thursday, June 11, 2009 | 10:48 a.m.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons has decided not to re-appoint Adjutant General Cynthia Kirkland, the first woman to hold the state’s top military post.

Kirkland, a member of the Air National Guard since 1982, was named to the post by Gov. Kenny Guinn in 2005. She oversees 4,000 airmen and soldiers in the National Guard.

Kirkland is a major general and was authorized a state salary of $117,030 in addition to $30,000-$40,000 a year from the federal government.

The state Attorney General’s Office said in a 1984 legal opinion the adjutant general could receive both a state and federal salary.

Daniel Burns, communication director for Gibbons, said interviews are underway for a replacement. He said the governor has written a letter praising Kirkland for her service.
