Hispanic rodeo approved at Boulder Highway site

Henderson planners grant permit for weekly cultural events rodeo

Friday, July 31, 2009 | 1:45 p.m.

The Henderson Planning Commission unanimously issued a use permit Thursday for a weekly Hispanic Cultural Events Rodeo on Boulder Highway.

The rodeo will be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Saturday through Oct. 17 on rodeo grounds next to the vacant Roadhouse Casino, located on Boulder Highway just north of Sunset Road.

Organizer Alfonso Rodriguez told the city in his application that he expects about 250 attendees each week.

Rodriguez could not be reached for comment, but in his justification letter, told the city that he has years of experience operating rodeos, many at the Roadhouse site, and said the Hispanic Cultural Events Rodeo would be a welcome addition to Henderson.

“I believe the rodeo is a positive addition to the multicultural growth the city of Henderson is currently experiencing,” Rodriguez wrote.

Only one resident spoke at the public hearing for the request. Robert Piantosi, who lives in a development across Boulder Highway from the rodeo site, told the commission he didn’t oppose the request, but had a concern about the noise level. Piantosi, who said music has been too loud at similar events in the past, asked the Commission to do something about it.

“For two hours or two and a half hours on Saturday, all you hear is thump, thump, thump,” Piantosi said. “If they could do something about that noise, that’s my only objection.”

In response, commissioners added conditions that subject the rodeo to the city’s noise ordinance and directed city staff to monitor the noise situation.
