Police to hold meeting tonight in response to boy’s shooting

Community meeting to spread message against violence

Site where boy was shot

Metro Police and neighbors will gather from 7 to 9 tonight in response to the shooting of an 8-year-old boy who was struck Saturday by a stray bullet.

The shooting occurred near Marion Drive and Kell Lane in northeast Las Vegas, said Lt. Jason Letkiewicz.

The boy is in critical but stable condition at University Medical Center and is expected to recover, Letkiewicz said.

Witnesses told police that the boy fell face down in the grass at the intersection after he was struck by a stray bullet as two cars were passing through the intersection.

Neighbors and police will gather for "Safe Valley United," a partnership between Metro Police and community leaders designed to spread a message against violence and ways to prevent it.

"Neighbors are saying, 'This is unacceptable,' " Letkiewicz said of the child's shooting.

Police have released a possible description of the two cars involved in the shooting. One may be a blue Ford Focus and the other a red Pontiac. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
