Temperatures to sizzle up past 110 degrees this week
Monday, July 13, 2009 | 5:50 a.m.
The curtain is rising on the hottest week so far this summer in Las Vegas.
The National Weather Service is forecasting that afternoon temperatures will be close to or above 110 degrees through Friday in the Las Vegas Valley.
Today's high temperature in the valley will be 109 degrees, starting with calm winds that will become southwest between 14 and 17 mph, gusting as high as 23 mph.
Tonight's temperature will fall to a low of around 83 degrees with west winds between 8 and 16 mph and wind gusts as high as 23 mph.
Tuesday's high temperature will be 108 degrees, Wednesday's 110 degrees, followed by 112 on Thursday and 113 on Friday.
The high temperature on Sunday was 109 degrees at McCarran International Airport.
The average high for this date is 104 degrees, with the record high of 115 degrees set in 1939. The normal overnight low is 78 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to get hotter today south of Las Vegas. Both Laughlin and Lake Havasu City are expected to hit 115 degrees.
If you're looking for cooler temperatures, you might try out Mount Charleston, which is expected to have a high of 83 degrees.
As hot as it's supposed to get this week, Las Vegas' hottest weather is traditionally toward the second half of this month. The warmest period of the year for Las Vegas is between July 17 and July 24, when the average high temperature is 105 degrees, forecasters said.
So how how can it get? The warmest temperature officially recorded in Las Vegas has been 117 degrees, on July 24, 1942, and again on July 19, 2005, according to weather service records.

This is another reason to change the law to allow prostitution in clark county, and stop the persecution of the casinos for allowing some "lewd" behavior in the private clubs. You just have to have SOME reason for tourists to bear this heat and come here !!!

Yes, a group of local scientists is predicting it will be dark later tonight.
:)
OK, that's not true. But I am predicting it will get dark later tonight.
However, I have a couple of other thoughts ...
So, that you know, it is highly likely this story will be one of the most-read stories on our site today and that's because people find the weather (even when it's normal) to be interesting. There is a reason why the local television newscasts dedicate so much of their airtime to the weather -- people are interested in that information.
Also, one of the great attributes of an online news site is that reading every story is completely opt-in; you make the choice to read or view something on a news site by clicking on the link.
Our suggestion to you is to no longer read our weather stories when the headline implies it is going to be hot.
Y'know, if we had water pipes embedded in every street, we'd never have to consume the first electric watt or gas BTU for hot water. 'eh?

Dude, is the heat causing you to flame the idiots? Actually, I think the Sun should let you guys take a more aggressive stance to idiot posters in the comments section. Some of them deserved to get flamed by the staff. It would make for compelling reading.
Drink lots of water
Man, it is so hot today that I overheard Mary Jo Buttifuco telling Amy Fisher to shoot her with a squirt gun.
Ohhh!
It's so hot that Sen. Ensign had to make a special trip Washington's Potomac River to bury his head in the sand.
That's how hot it is, I tell ya!
Rumor has it it's going to be HOT !! But you did't hear it from me ! But again this is "still" the desert....and it tends to get "HOT". God bless the man who invented A/C.
