Child who drowned in apartment swimming pool identified

Monday, July 13, 2009 | 11:30 a.m.

A 4-year-old boy who drowned Saturday afternoon in a northwest Las Vegas swimming pool has been identified.

The Clark County Coroner's Office said Zavier Smothers was the drowning victim and ruled the death an accident, a spokeswoman for the coroner said today.

The boy was with a number of children and adults at a pool party, Metro Police spokesman Bill Cassell said. The pool was at an apartment complex on Gowan Road between Tenaya Way and U.S. 95.

The adults were going to move the children from the pool and got distracted, Cassell said. The victim was found at the bottom of the pool.

The first police officer who arrived at the scene began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child after arriving about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

This is the seventh child to die from drowning so far this year, the same number as the total from all of last year.
