LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Aftershocks of 9/11 still hitting hard today

Monday, July 13, 2009 | 2:05 a.m.

The 9/11 attacks have accomplished much more for Osama bin Laden and his gang of thugs than they could ever have dreamed. Our once great and united nation is now economically devastated, divided and far from closure for the loved ones who are still suffering from the attacks.

When our government authorized the invasion of the sovereign country of Iraq, it created the greatest unity of our enemies throughout the world. The true monetary cost of the Iraq war will never be realized. Along with the billions of dollars, we must consider the war casualties, the maimed and what they and their families and friends must endure for the rest of their lives. The pictures on TV showing the slaughter from the bombings in Iraq reveal what can happen to innocent people because of poor judgment and distorting of facts.

We have lost the respect of many countries over Guantanamo Bay and secret prison camps. We have scarred our once-proud nation with torture tactics that were used to produce false evidence for our invasion of Iraq.

We have divided our nation to the point that our once-family-friendly television media constantly debate which political party deserves the most criticism. How much more hate can we endure without total government collapse?

We must realize that our new leader, President Barack Obama, is trying to once again unite our country with passion and forgiveness for all except those who wish to destroy us. We must also consider his efforts for closure in the 9/11 attacks by trying to create a strong, united force to defeat our enemies in Afghanistan.

Please let us get over the Party of No and get with the Yes We Can attitude. The Iraq fiasco has squandered our wealth; let’s get behind the stimulus package and put Americans back on the job and the road to reality.
