Temperatures firing up in Las Vegas
Thermometer to climb to 110-plus early next week
Friday, July 10, 2009 | 9:05 a.m.
Make sure your air conditioner and icemaker work -- Las Vegas is heading into some of the hottest days of the summer.
The National Weather Service says today's high temperature will hit 105 degrees, Saturday it will be 104 and Sunday it climbs to 109.
But the thermometer is just warming up -- Monday and Tuesday bring temperatures of 111 degrees, forecasters say.
The winds won't help too much with the heat. Today's breezes will be between 3 and 10 mph, Saturday's will be 5 mph and Sunday's will reach only between 6 and 9 mph.
Today's high of 104 will be normal for this date, according to weather service records. The record for this date was 114, set in 1943 and matched in 2003.
How hot can it get? In Las Vegas, the highest temperature ever recorded was 117 degrees on July 19, 2005.
But it can get hotter. Death Valley National Park recorded a high temperature of 134 degrees on July 10, 1913, setting the hottest temperature on record for North America. The world record is 136 degrees, set Sept. 13, 1922, at El Azizia, Libya.

this is my comment, when i lived out here in 1994-1996 i believe the hottest temp in aug of 1995 was 120 degrees, can you check that info, i dont believe it was july at 117 , it was 120
woot. the heat!
This heat is nothing compared to the politcal heat that Ensign is under.
HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
lmsqueen: I got the temperature record of 117 degrees from the National Weather Service. I couldn't find anything about August 1995 being 120 degrees from their records. The highest the weather service had for any August was 116 degrees, which was recorded Aug. 1, 1979, Aug. 3, 1979, and Aug. 11, 1940.
But I don't doubt that you might remember it being 120 degrees that month back in 1995. That's because temperatures do vary around the valley. I've seen lots of temperature readings on bank thermometers that vary from place to place.
i remember the summer of '95 as being one of the hottest on record. we had five days of over 150 degrees with constant southern winds in excess of 60 miles an hour. MY DOG EXPLODED!
