IGT lays off workers as Bally expands

International Game Technology said it's laying off another 55 workers at its Reno headquarters this week as it continues to adjust during the recession. Meanwhile, its main competitor says it’s looking to grow.

Company spokesperson Ed Rogich said the Reno layoffs are part of the 161 layoffs the company announced on Thursday in its domestic and international workforce.

IGT has cut about 700 people, or 10 percent of its workforce, since November 2008. In March, the company said it was slashing its regular quarterly dividend nearly 60 percent in a move to save about $100 million in cash annually.

Rogich said the company is continuing to look for opportunities to be more efficient, but would not address the possibility of more layoffs.

Also, Las Vegas-based Bally Technologies, IGT’s main competitor, announced Thursday that it’s leased 77,000 square feet of additional office space in Las Vegas and Reno to accommodate the company’s growth.

“The acquisition of these two leased facilities demonstrates the strength of our business despite these challenging times,” Bally Technology CEO Richard Haddrill said in a statement.

Bally Technologies employs more than 2,800 people.
