Sun editorial:

The erratic Sarah Palin

Decision to resign by Alaska governor, considering presidential run, is beyond belief

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 | 2:09 a.m.

Sarah Palin proved last year, as John McCain’s running mate on the Republican ticket, that she had no business being a heartbeat away from the presidency. She more than demonstrated that by her lack of experience and inability to deviate from a prepared script to answer basic questions from reporters during the campaign.

Still, she was being talked about as a contender for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012. It’s hard to imagine such a path, however, after her disastrous performance Friday in which she announced she would resign as governor of Alaska.

In a muddled and rambling statement, Palin said that when she decided she wouldn’t seek reelection in 2010, she also believed she should resign. Here, in her words, was part of her reasoning for doing so:

“And so as I thought about this announcement, that I wouldn’t run for reelection and what that means for Alaska, I thought about, well, how much fun some governors have as lame ducks. They maybe travel around their state, travel to other states, maybe take their overseas international trade missions.

“So many politicians do that. And then I thought, that’s wrong. Many just accept that lame duck status and they hit the road, they draw a paycheck, they kind of milk it, and I’m just not going to put Alaska through that.”

It didn’t occur to Palin to actually buckle down and do the job that Alaskans elected her to do just 2 1/2 years ago? Was she not strong enough to resist the temptations of living the high life she accused other lame duck governors of enjoying?

Palin didn’t rule out a run for the presidency. If she is intent on running, then stepping down as governor certainly will free her schedule to campaign in the Lower 48.

But it is difficult to think that many voters — whether they’re Democratic, Republican or independent — would ignore the fact that she deserted Alaska’s voters. Whatever spin she’s trying to put on this, the bottom line is that she’s a quitter.
