Letter to the editor:

Palin suffers from double standard

Monday, July 6, 2009 | 2:03 a.m.

Maureed Dowd’s column in Sunday’s Las Vegas Sun is another example of the liberal media’s double standard when it comes to Sarah Palin and conservatives.

Barack Obama served 18 months of a six-year term in the U.S. Senate before he hit the presidential campaign trail. Instead of doing the right thing for the people of Illinois, he continued to hold his seat and draw his paycheck although he rarely showed up for work.

At least Sarah Palin had the decency to step down and let someone else lead the state if she was ready to move on.

Discussion: 52 comments so far…

  1. All Republicans are victims of a double standard thats just the way the news media is I would say that 95% of all the people in the news business are liberal there's really nothing that can be done about it these are the people that control the news industry as well as hollywood. The Republicans know this going into politics that they will have to run against there Democrat opponent as well as the press to bad that most of the voters can't read between the lines and sort out all the facts from the bull#hit.

  2. Powerplay..You seem to suffer from that misconception yourself. You seem unable to read between the lines of your own bull#hit.

  3. I didn't see any complaints about John McCain not doing his job as a Senator while campaigning for the presidency. He missed more votes than Obama did.

Great double standard as a republican Sarah Palin can skip work - she missed lots of time while on the campaign trail - and still get praised for not finishing the term the voters sent her to the state capital to fulfill.

Her reasons for leaving mid-term are so she (1) won't be blamed to the economic mess she's leaving behind; (2) hopes to avoid more ethics violations that would cause further political damage & (3) can get a better income - her book deal.

The one reason no sane person believes is that she wants to help her fellow Alaskans.

An old high school coach used to tell us "Winners never quit and quitters never win." Seems to me Palin is a just "cut and run" republican.

  4. The woman is a walking, talking, Saturday Night Live skit. I would vote for her for president of the P.T.A. Or maybe the Jaycee's. That is her level of intellect. No offense to either of those fine organizations.

  5. More power to Sarah Palin for doing things her way, on her timetable so she can set her own agenda.

While having the children of Palin's family abuse by the likes of David Letterman, Joy Behar, and Maureen Dowd, and having to personally pay out millions of dollars to defend herself under the quirky AK ethics law for frivolous complaints, and having accomplish what she wanted to in Alaska why not move on.

The Media should be happy that Sarah will now be more accessible. If Sarah moves to Washington or New York Maureen Dowd may actually meet Palin and well will see where that go.

Free at last, Free at last, thank God Sarah is Free at last.

  6. Cut-and-Paste stenographer Commentator Maureen Dowd really needs to get some new material.

Her columns on Sarah keep repeating the same old tired lines and Sunday's was no different.

But what else would you expect the NY Times to pay for but for an ex-sports columnist and ex-metropolitan reporter

She began her career in 1974 as an editorial assistant for The Washington Star, where she later became a sports columnist and metropolitan reporter when the Star closed in 1981.

No idea what she did in 1982.

Ms. Dowd joined The New York Times as a metropolitan reporter in 1983.

  7. Palin is the biggest weapon the democrats have. It sounds like the smart republicans have started to figure that out. She is a divider, not a uniter...which is why I presume she's closing in on pariah status with the higher ups in the gop.

That party is in shambles right now, and I guess they are finally waking up to realize that she is pretty much the antithesis of the solution for the grand prize - unite the gop and make a serious run against Obama in 2012. I am guessing if she does make a run in 2012, it will be under some halfwit 3rd party she dreams up with Todd.

  8. "While having the children of Palin's family abuse by the likes of David Letterman, Joy Behar, and Maureen Dowd,"

Future, did you complain as loudly when Chelsea Clinton was in the media crosshairs? In case you forgot, the "abuse" heaped on her was just as bad.

And, as I posted yesterday elsewhere, Palin HERSELF said that you have to have a thick skin to be in politics. She said this after the 2008 campaign - you know, the one she's now complaining was too hostile to her.

  9. Palin hasn't made a good decision since she hit the national scene in John McCain's last chance effort to revive his campaign. I wouldn't expect any better in the future.

    PALIN - POWERPLAY 2012
    The Dumb & Dumber Choyce

  10. Sarah is obviously in way over her head and wilts under media scrutiny. Even the served up FOX interviews make her look like the mental lightweight that she is. I look forward to her running in 2012, if that is the best the Republicans can do, it will be the death of their party as we know it and we will get better and more moderate candidates from them in the future.

  11. Comparing a senator's job to a governor's is a bit apples-to-oranges. Yes, there's some similarity, but the primary executive role that is the province of a governor, including the veto, puts substantially more power in the hands of a governor than of a senator. If I lived in Alaska, I'd be thrilled to see her go - but we can bet she's just setting the stage to keep her face in the national media, and turn it into as much money and power for her family as she can. This is not a person who feels a deeper responsibility to her constituents than she does to herself.

  12. There is no similarity between a Governor and a Senator. Senators do not run anything - not even a budget. They have no tangible responsibilities. Their main responsibility is to show up and vote, but even that isn't required. Sometimes, they just vote "present" as Obama did at least 130 times.
Governors are head of the executive branch of their state, control budgeting, appoint officials (including judges), veto state bills and have a significant role in legislation. Governor's also act as commander-in-chief of their state's National Guard, have power to commute or pardon a criminal, fill vacancies in the state's Senate seats, and have significant involvement in foreign affairs.

  13. Here's a word or two of encouragement to Sarah Palin....."Go Sarah go! Go Sarah go!"

She's exactly what a dying party needs at this point in time...The GOP is on its last legs. Having Palin as one of two or three leaders of the GOP is like an old cowboys using his last two bullets to put his once proud horse out of its misery...

    "Bang....Bang....rest in peace, GOP!"

  14. Palin was the single reason I did not vote for McCain. I was going to vote for him, but then he got stuck with Palin for his running mate and the thought of her being "one breath away" was too much for me and I voted for "None of the above" instead.

Sarah Palin represents all that is wrong with the Republican party today with very little of what was once good.

  15. henderson.....henderson.....

I normally pretty much ignore much of the crap that you post but I must ask....

Can you give all of us an example of a "sigificant involvement in foreigh affairs" that a governor (let's say Nevada's present governor...) has had or may have?

    I just have to know.....

  16. henderson: Sarah Palin is/was popular in Alaska because she got everybody checks from the oil revenues generated there. If you'll check you will find out that her colleagues complain that she ignores most of the duties of a governor that you cited. Also keep in mind that Alaska is not mainstream America ( nice place to visit .......) but mostly a state where business and industry are not up to speed with the rest of the US, and therefore there's not a whole lot of governing to be done. Palin does not qualify for national politics.

  17. Really Willie? Well if her colleagues complain, than it must be true! I totally stand corrected.

  18. Please give generously

I know we're all suffering from compassion fatigue, but this is vital:

    Bless you.

    Ditto. Sometimes the truth hurts.

  20. boftx,

yeah yeah u were gonna vote for McCain....

i suppose you're gonna tell us next that you are NOT a liberal or democrat or progressive and claim u are "independent".

yep, just like Harry Reid....."Independent....like Nevada".... to quote his last reelection slogan.

Boy, I for one feel MUCH better having JOE BIDEN "one breath" from the presidency. now that man is a genius!!!!

and what better example of media bias, every time the man opens his mouth he makes a gaffe, and yet it is never reported in the mainstream media. how bout the time he stated when the stock market crashed, FDR got on TV and addressed the nation..... only problem is, FDR WASN'T president when the stock market crashed, AND TV wasn't invented yet....

    nice, huh?

  21. hussein obummer did not qualify for national polics and look where that idiot is!

  22. just an average joe: Biden has more political savvy and experience in his little finger than Palin could ever hope to accumulate in her pea sized brain.
Misspeaking the word TV for the word radio is a big deal to you?
I know Joe Biden having had the privilege of voting for him every 6 years in Delaware and there is no one better suited for the job he is in now. He has a temper and he says things incorrect sometimes but he is rarely proven wrong. You should feel safe he is the VP even though he can't see Russia from his house.

  23. willie: not just misspeaking TV for radio. FDR wasn't elected until 1932, then took office in Jan 1933 (the stock market crashed in Oct 1929). he didn't "misspeak". he totally made sh*t up off the cuff. that's what he does. the man simply does not know what he is talking about.

    "political savvy and experience"?

is that what u call when in an interview right after obama took office when he "warned" us that "we have a brilliant young president, who will be tested by the world inside of 6 months, mark my words"?

had Sarah Palin made these same silly mistakes, they would have been repeated over and over again in the press, as when she stumbled in the Katie Couric interview.

  24. "is that what u call when in an interview right after obama took office when he "warned" us that "we have a brilliant young president, who will be tested by the world inside of 6 months, mark my words"?

had Sarah Palin made these same silly mistakes, they would have been repeated over and over again in the press, as when she stumbled in the Katie Couric interview."

Um, actually, that Biden quote WAS repeated over and over again in the press. Where were you? Asleep?

  25. is that what u call when in an interview right after obama took office when he "warned us that "we have a brilliant young president, who will be tested by the world inside of 6 months, mark my words"?

Doesn't the N Korean saber rattling qualify as "being tested"?

Please don't compare Sarah Palin to anyone of intelligence. It says volumes about yours.

  26. Um, actually, that Biden quote WAS repeated over and over again on Fox News.

the networks let it slide after a single day, just as they made little or no mention of the fact he had NO IDEA who was president when the stock market crashed, and that television had not been invented.

and his quote about the "brilliant young president" is just outlandish. it served absolutely no purpose, no political gain. no reason to say that in ANY context. it just shows what a loose cannon with no understanding of anything he is.

  27. average, anyone who is the least bit familiar with my posts can assure you that I am NOT a liberal. I consider myself a Jeffersonian, if anything. I won't bother trying to describe the difference between a Libertarian and one who is a member of the Libertarian party, I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

  28. boftx,

i just read your prior posts.

i stand corrected, my apologies if i offended.

i wrongly assumed u were one of the many "progressive liberal democrats" who like to identify themselves as "independent" while at the same time enthusiastically supporting everything Obama, Reid, and Pelosi do.

  29. left wingers, especially the ones with their nose up against the wall , all fear Sarah Palin. Governor Palin is a formidable foe to all the liberals, that is why they mock her. They don't feel comfy with a women in power. I figure in 2016 after Barack Obama has the country all messed up she will prevail, All hail Sarah, she Da Man!!!

  30. phargo,

u give "the anointed one" obama way too much credit. rest assured he will be a ONE TERM president.

on the other hand, maybe we don't give him enough credit, he's on track to totally mess the country up in a single term. I guess that would make him even more successful as a president than Jimmy Carter!

he can fool all of us some of the time, and some of us ALL of the time (the left wing fools we've been replying to...), but he CANNOT fool ALL of us ALL of the time.

  31. Before Obama was a part-time US Senator, he was a state senator.

Before that he was a law "professor".

He did a excellent job on that Iran policy of "speak no evil then speak evil the next week".

It was very similar to "I have no freaking clue what to do" policy or the "I am like a deer caught in a headlights of a car" policy.

Putin must have thought it was so precious when Obama said he wanted to end the cold war.

Having "I put my foot in my mouth" Biden out there is so wonderful, too. Ughhhh.....we goofed on the economy and we give the "green light" to Israel to bomb the heck out of Iran.

I think writing those 2 books helped he get ready for those high quality decisions.

  32. When it is all boiled down to basics who really cares about Sarah Palin or Obama. The Governors, The President and Congress are just pawns for big business. Trust me, Obama is president for the purpose of making the American people feel better because he presents an intelligent and sensitive image to the public. But it will be business as usual for the Corporations and their lobbies who in actuality control our great "land of the so called free"

  33. Palin the fighter is down for the count. TKO'd by MSNBC?

She just couldn't hack it. The woman who said Hillary needed to be able to take the rough parts of campaigning threw in the towel.

It's one thing to leave office for a higher office. She didn't do that. She just quit. She abandoned her constituents and the people who voted for her. Not like, say, the junior Senator from Illinois, who accepted a promotion to the Presidency. He's still serving the people of Illinois, along with all the other states. Palin just gave up. She took her marbles and went home, like a testy four year-old.

So yes, those who think quitting is evidence of her great decision-making abilities, I have a question. Would you feel safe having someone so easily flustered with their hand on the button? Her petulance and irrational decision-making, coupled with her poor communication abilities would spell doom for the United States.

How many reasons did she give for quitting? I couldn't follow her.
    http://bit.ly/366Dz

I mean, even Fox News contributor Liz Trotta thinks she's out-of-control. She also said "flaky" and "wacky."
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvj-Xr0ir...

Palin's far out of the mainstream, anyway. She apparently did us all a favor by quitting. The lunatic fringe of the right still waves their Palin banners around, but she stands no shot at a higher office now.

  34. henderson: NPR had the author of the Vanity Fair article about Sarah Palin on their air today. They invited callers from Alaska to call in and comment. All 4 callers were negative about her due to her ethics violations, turning a surplus into huge deficits when mayor of Wasilla, quitting as governor, bring her religious beliefs into her politics, etc., etc. It was not pretty with two of the callers sounding very angry. She's done and doesn't realize it. She'll score a big payday with her book and continue to milk money from the suckers who will pay to hear her speak, but come 2011 she won't have the backing of the Republican Party, or whatever's left of it.
So she and her family will have struck it rich on the backs of people who can afford to toss their money away. Good for her. It reminds me of George Foreman selling those grills every 6 months with a new dial on them. I'll bet some people have 5 of them, all new and improved.

  35. SgtRock: I think writing those 2 books helped he get ready for those high quality decisions.

    Yes, and childrens do learn.

  36. Palins are lying trash. Period

  37. Her lawyer (Van Flein) says one of the main reasons she quit was the abuse from Letterman!!!!!

"Ethics complaints from critics led to her paying back taxes on state per diem funds she received while living at her home in Wasilla, outside Anchorage; another investigation led to her paying about $8,100 in travel expenses for her children.

Van Flein said the state's ethics process,..., has been "abused" to harass her and may lead Alaskans to ignore more serious allegations. And he said Letterman's early-June joke about one of her daughters being "knocked up" by New York Yankees outfielder Alex Rodriguez "demonstrated to her that there's some sort of disconnect here."

"When people don't accept normal bounds of decency making jokes like that about children, maybe this is not good for the state right now," Van Flein said. "And maybe somebody else who is not the subject and whose family is not the subject of this scrutiny can move the state forward."

So, I wonder if she thinks running for President or (GOD FORBID)actually being president means people will stop picking on her.

Her quitting brought to mind a very old saying ... "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". Well, it seems she did exactly that. Give her credit for some sense.

  38. another insightful, intelligent commentary from Nick.......

you seem to like to call others "uneducated" and refer to them as "trash" and "trailer trash".

sounds like you're own self-loathing is bubbling to the surface.

BTW it must be get awful hot in your trailer during the day when u are sitting around eating the twinkies u bought with your food stamps and unemployment check and switch back and forth between "Oprah" and "the Jerry Springer Show".

  39. What was McCain thinking? Choosing Palin ensured that his campaign would not pull out of the dive.

I don't see how this resignation helps her in any way.

  40. Hopefully for us Paalin takes the money and runs, far away from politics.
The female Rush Limbaugh? Why not, maybe between the dittoheads and the Palinites a new party could be formed to accept the religous wacko base and save the Republican party from extinction.

  41. Governor Palin will probably try to find a state that has an election coming up that she can win. Probably a Senate seat, a state that has a weak democrat that she can beat. John Kerry did it in Mass. Hillary did it in NY as did Bobby Kennedy before her. Sarah Palin can generate a lot of cash contributions and that is an attractive quality in politics. Hopefully right here in Nevada, but I doubt it. Yes Obama will win in '12 because a fresh batch of credit cards will be maxed out by the black people to donate to Barack. "Just an average joe" remember Obama and the black people still have that Audacity of Hope. he will be here till Jan 2017, amid many scandals and various disgraces and yes Michele will be wearing sleeves to cover her fat arms and she will be wearing more comfy shoes (mules?) and she will look a lot like Moms Mabley by then.

  42. Why is it that every time someone criticizes Palin, she and her supporters try to point the finger at someone else? The media , , , Barack Obama . . . that "trickster" Katie Couric , , , John McCain

I'd have more respect if she were able to face criticism head-on rather than whining about it. I think Rove is right--hard to understand what is going on here.

  43. What double standard? McCain didn't step down during his campaign and ummmm oh yes, neither did Sarah Palin!!!

  44. There is no double standard in the Republican party, because there are obviously no longer any standards. Rather than looking for a world class leader to be the standard bearer, they are looking for anything that makes noise. Well Sarah makes lots of noise but little sense. Come on people you support a fool as the leader of your party? Surely you can do better. Meghan McCain is too young but she is heads above this jerk.

  45. As a collective whole, Republicans, Democrats in the end, it's this subterfuge that keeps 90% of Americans looking at the stars while our country is being mismanaged. It never mattered who won the election, people never seemed to get that. The selection of candidates did NOT include anyone with the business skill set to turn around a failing company like America. Our Great grand children will be the ones paying the cost for all this Deficit spending. Long gone are the wise elders who would take on the responsibilities of running our great nation, left are sons of sons who never belonged in the White house to begin with like Bush, his Brother Jeb Bush would have been a fine president, but we ended up with the worse of the litter, Now we have Obama .. Which who didn't know with the current condition of the country he was "Not" going to lose. Why historically blame needs a face, and in the country we have always utilized the African American as our scapegoat because self blame is more damaging to our pride. So as we move backwards, and lose sight of any real strategies for a hopeful future, we can rest assured that as a country we will continue to look to the sky because 90% are just not going to get this simple fact. That if we continue to allow Mexican nationals to cross the boarders breaking the "law" to do poor quality work at jobs some genius "assumed" no body else wouldn't take at a time like this"most of the highway workers making 15 -22 dollars an hour Mexicans.. look for yourself" , while allowing HB1 visas to India's work force, where supposedly they are better educated in the technology originating everywhere but India, where outsourced workers have access YOUR personal, & financial data, but rest assured they don't do background checks there and was it terrorist we were watching, who now with the help of your credit card, banks, and cell phone companies interest in profit over safety or even its interest to support the market that patronizes it services. Yes this has become more of a rant that a comment about Ms Palin because personally I don't know her. From a distant it seemed that she was only selected because she was female, because there are more well known, well seasoned politicians out there. But who really cares when it's more important to lobbyists to help draw a division between the needs of the people and that of individuals. Like I said, the investment should be in educating our future not to make the mistake we made in putting them in a horrible situation. Or maybe we can outsource our government to Mexico as part of some 3rd world financial Aid program..

  46. Poor Palin. Stupid Republicans had no other choice but to hang their hat on this idiot who now has a lower favorable rating in Alaska than Bush as President of the USA.
The deperation these stupid right wingers put up is laughable. They still search out Clinton while making excuses for the record number of liars, adulterers, homsexuals, thieves in their own party. Is it any wonder only two in five consider themselves Republicans today. Phargo is a true representative of sickening posts. He is so desperate he uses his best (laughable) verberage to attack a woman. What a scumbag rat.
Palin, the village idiot is leaving the village and Alaska will be better off.
All of these right wing posters should pay attention to their party leaders regarding this idiot Palin. She may make a lot of money but she is done. If they chose they can visit Dwight Eisenhowers extramarital affair while President.Idiots.

  47. Wow, everyone sure has their panties and underwear in a bunch over Sarah. Get a life!

  48. wanna talk about double standards. If anyone could possibly be the anti-Christ. It's Sarah Palin, the fact that people actually believe in her is mind-boggling. And I'm an Alaskan.

  49. Really Willie?

Wow! NPR got 4 whopping people to call in an complain about Palin! That is shocking! As I said before, I stand corrected. If the unnamed colleagues you mentioned and 4 callers on NPR hate her, who am I to argue.

I hope you know how dumb you sound when you make these comments.

  50. I don't believe this applies.

First of all you considered Barack Obama and Sarah Palin on the way that Barack didn't step down. Obama did go for a "higher calling" that Palin claimed. He became President of the greatest state in the world.

What did Palin do? Step down because she couldn't handle the media and lawmakers, something a politician goes through and is part of life and she currently is only with family.

So no, your comparison is irrelevant. Obama wasn't a governor either...so you can't quite compare.

  51. Homer, have you had a look at Obama's approval rating lately? They are falling, and the number of people that strongly disapprove has surpassed the number of people that strongly approve.

  52. Sarah Palin is a nut. I lost all respect for the voters in Alaska when they elected her governor. Another incompetent Republican lying to the american people, all the while wrapping herself in the american flag and "american values".

If Sarah Palin is the best the Republican Party can do for 2012, then they deserve to LOSE!

They gave us 8 years of the Worst President in American History, George Bush. We are paying for the mess he created. Sarah Palin might make George Bush actually look intelligent by comparison.
