Flashpoint:

Few journalists have had as much effect …

Few journalists have had as much effect over the past four decades on the Legislature than Brendan Riley, the Associated Press capital bureau chief who has been in Carson City since 1972. Riley announced last week that he would retire after decades of providing the baseline reporting everyone else followed. He not only did the nuts and bolts the wire service is known for, but he frequently broke important stories that set the tone for the session. I think his greatest contribution was his hiring of young reporters to cover the session with him and becoming a mentor whom few if any will forget. He was a wise man in a place not known for wisdom, and he will be greatly missed by many people. I’m one of them.
