Open house held at Adelson school

The Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus will host an open house for prospective families of kindergarten through 12th grade students Feb. 8.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the school, 9700 W. Hillpointe Road.

Attendees will be able to meet with Head of School Paul Schiffman and other faculty, as well as current students.

They will also be able to tour the 14-acre campus, visit with teachers and attend mini-classes and sports programs.

Nearly 400 students are currently enrolled at the Adelson Educational Campus.

The school is the only pre-kindergarten through 12th grade Jewish school in Southern Nevada.

Get involved with 4-H

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development program will be holding its annual open house Feb. 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

4-H is a nationwide club teaching youth ages 5-19 about leadership, citizenship and life skills. Clubs from around the Las Vegas valley will demonstrate their rocketry, robotics and small animal programs.

The event is free to the public and will be held at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

Food drive a success

O.K. Adcock Elementary School students collected 2,288 canned and dried goods for the Salvation Army during the holiday season.

Students from three classrooms participated — Mr. Hunt's fifth graders and second graders from Ms. Morris' and Ms. Mazzei's classes.

Become a mentor

Clark County School District officials are encouraging adults from the business community to become a mentor for a middle school student as part of the Stay in School mentoring project.

Mentors are asked to provide guidance and assistance to students who are in danger of dropping out of school, as well as try to engage their interest in a possible future career.

School to host wine tasting auction

Solomon Schecter Day School will honor the memory of D'Vorre and Hal Ober on Feb. 21 at its annual event, The White Russian Wine Tasting and Auction Experience.

Hal Ober was a founding member of the school's board while D'Vorre Ober was a school volunteer.

The event, sponsored by Southern Wine and Spirits Inc., will begin at 7 p.m. at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane, near Town Center Drive and Desert Inn Road.

Tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased in advance or at the door. Proceeds from the event will go to the Sidney Chaplin Scholarship Fund. To purchase tickets or for more information, call 804-1333 ext. 114 or e-mail [email protected].

Financial workshop

High school seniors and their parents can learn more about the college/university financial aid and scholarship process at workshop on Feb. 18.

The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Texas Station Hotel, Dallas Ballroom. The general presentation will held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. At 7 p.m., representatives from community cultural groups will provide specific cultural scholarship and financial aid information.

NV Energy scholarships

NV Energy offers two Powerful Partnership scholarships for each Clark County high school along with one for the home schooled. One-time scholarships of $1,000 are awarded based on the program's selection criteria and on the number of applications received. The scholarship may be used at any accredited university, college or trade school. Seniors both in public and private schools as well as the home schooled are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship recognizes the accomplishments of local high school students who have demonstrated leadership in academics and community service.
