Man, four children rescued at Red Rock Canyon

Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 | 6:10 p.m.

A man and four children hiking in Red Rock Canyon were plucked off a ledge after dark today when they became stranded.

Metro Police Search and Rescue and Bureau of Land Management rescuers brought the lost hikers down one by one via helicopter after a report that a 63-year-old man and four children, ages 7 to 16, were missing in the Red Rock Canyon area.

National Park Service dispatchers received a report of the missing group before 5 p.m. Monday, Metro Police spokesman Officer Bill Cassell said.

The group was near Lost Canyon, an area with a spring and stands of willows and in a deep red and white sandstone canyon. They didn't have much food or water, authorities said.

Cassell said rescuers will try to determine where the hikers are and then reach them before nightfall.

"Sometimes you can call a cell phone, figure out with landmarks where they are and go right to them," Cassell said.
