LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Damage wrought by GOP will be long-lasting
Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 | 2:05 a.m.
Regarding Owen Nelson’s Friday letter to the editor, headlined “Democrats will no longer have Bush to blame”:
President George W. Bush’s legacy will be long-lasting, and things will get worse before they get better. It’s going to be a hard road ahead for us all. We are entering another Republican Great Depression, and just as was the case with the 1929 Depression, it will take the true fiscal conservatives — the Democrats — to get us out of it.
Mr. Nelson also states that the Democrats have failed to get much of anything accomplished since taking back Congress. Perhaps that is because the Republicans smashed previous records for being the most obstructionist Senate minority, filibustering more bills than any other in U.S. history, in some cases even bills one of their own had his name on.
Some Republican leaders have even admitted on camera that would be their strategy, and how it is working well for them. Without a 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority, perhaps the Democratic Party should threaten the “nuclear option,” which the Republicans held over our heads during their reign.

President Bill Clinton's legacy will be long-lasting, and things will get worse before they get better. It's going to be a hard road ahead for us all. It is to bad that Clinton failed us by signing into law several financial bills that allowed this mess to happen. It is to bad that Clinton started the policy of placing heavy pressure on financial institutions to lower lending standards for sub-prime loans. It is to bad that Clinton appointed people to the FRB that made interest rates so low in the 2000's.
It is too bad that Clinton did not kill Bin Laden when he had the chances to. It is too bad that Clinton allowed the terror army in Afghanistan to grow.
"it will take the true fiscal conservatives -- the Democrats -- to get us out of it."
Democrats are funny. Here is a hint, look up the words fiscal and conservative, then please explain to me and the rest of the world how you possibly think Democrats are fiscally conservative.
Your messiah was elected, hasnt even taken office and controversy already surrounds him. Get ready to be taxed into oblivion, unless ofcourse you are the typical Obama supporter, who pays no taxes already
"please explain to me and the rest of the world how you possibly think Democrats are fiscally conservative."
Bill Clinton
"Democrats are funny. Here is a hint, look up the words fiscal and conservative, then please explain to me and the rest of the world how you possibly think Democrats are fiscally conservative."
By looking at 20 years of history. Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II account for more than 85% of our national debt. Reagans trickle down/supply side/reaganomics/voodoo economics, that Bush I & II carried on, did nothing but accumulate massive debt. Their 'less taxes' philosophy did no such thing, they just passed the largest tax increases in history on to your children and grandchildren.
Clinton inherited massive deficits and a recession. In 4 years of proper fiscal management the budget had a surplus, the economy was roaring, and every economic indicator was improving. The opposite with the last 3 Republican presidents.
Americans vote with their pocketbook. The Republicans politics of destruction are back firing on them. Americans don't want obstructionists when America's burning.
The only controversy surrounding Obama are made to be by the Neocons of the Republican party, the same as they did with Clinton for 8 years. I guarantee they will twist and spin to make Obama 'look' as poor as possible, no matter how well he does.
William had a full glass of kool aid this morning. You would like it to be as simple as
that would'nt you? "its all bush's fault".
kool aid drinkers are what perpetuate america's problems, are you kidding me? do you really think that democrats had nothing to do with the mortgage mess we are in?
Obama's approval rating will be the worst in history by the end of 09'.
The plan is to spend more money on schools and roads, nothing will be created for sustainable growth, home values will continue to fall, but worst of all, more social engineering
with the new health care program, wait til you see this precious deal. going to your doctor will be like going to the DMV.
socialism is the next deal here. bit by bit,
we are getting there. nance posted facts, you william have posted no facts just your observations. More Government is not the answer.
Barney Frank stated that wall street created
the mess and government will have to fix it.
Fact is Government handed a free pass to the entire industry of home builders and lenders to wall street to go ahead, it's ok. clinton should have left it alone and none of this would have happened. but no, let us engineer who gets and who does'nt get. ridiculous.
Bush was handed a problem that was already there, that is a fact.
First, everyone knows the very essence of being a Democrat is to tax and spend. That's the exact OPPOSITE of fiscal conservatism. Obama has already promised to raise my taxes. Therefore I (and the rest of us) will spend less, and the economy will suffer. Great idea.
Second, the Dems seem to forget that they've controlled Congress for several years, so any tax increase passed is as much on their shoulders as on President Bush's. Filibusters or not, they passed them.
Third, Obama's controversies are of his own making from his own horrible, radical ideas of "change." The mere fact that these controversies make it through the mainstream liberal media is absolute proof that the Republicans have nothing to do with them.
Can we raise taxes and lower wages? Yes we can!
Can we weaken our national defense? Yes we can!
Can we bring socialism to America? Yes we can!
Change is indeed coming.
Exactly! Wait 'til you see what damage the Dems do.
"...everyone knows the very essence of being a Democrat is to tax and spend."
Utterly amazing. As if Bill Clinton does not even exist. A stunningly blind generalization, especially considering the outstanding counterpoint by Gordon just above your post. Good luck with those stereotypes.
"Obama's approval rating will be the worst in history by the end of 09'."
That'll be tough. George W. Bush set the bar pretty high on this one. Or should I say low.
"The plan is to spend more money on schools and roads, nothing will be created for sustainable growth..."
What's better for sustainable growth than investing in education and infrstructure?
It's ironic, DonKeyPunCh, to hear Republicans like yourself claiming that the lack of regulation of Wall Street is what led to this mess. Aren't you the party of fewer governmental regulations? Your standard-bearer Mr. Bush certainly thought so.
Even Mr. Nance's posts - factual though you may think they be - point out the bankruptcy of your argument. Rather than make a case for George Bush, he simply, day after day, recites the same litany of complaints about Clinton as though they excuse Bush's incompetence.
As President Gerald Ford once said, our long national nightmare is over.
Our nightmare is not over.
Clinton's policy of signing financial degregulation bills and putting pressure on financial institutions to lower standards on sub-prime loans will continue to haunt us for years to come.
"...will continue to haunt us for years to come."
Just like Bush.
"George W. Bush's presidency cost the country about $11.5 trillion, if we estimate liberally."
The Republicans spend as voraciously as the Dems and they are taking us all down a path of self-destruction! The hole just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Does this list form a more perfect union?
Wars, Wall Street, 911, bailouts, Katrina, Afghanistan, more War, Wall Street, Banks, GM, Ford, Chrysler, Fannie, Freddie, AIG, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, ad neaseum.
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
