Letter to the editor:
How a lottery could be boon for Nevada
Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 | 2:06 a.m.
Nevada could collect a substantial amount of money by introducing a lottery. If casinos joined the population in supporting a state lottery, we could all benefit.
Many retailers and the casinos could sell to their visitors, locals and tourists.
A state lottery also would create employment by establishing administrative offices, ticket printing and delivery of tickets to outlets.
Seldom do my friends go to casinos, but they might buy lottery tickets from time to time.
How many millions might be collected to help us with our budget problems?
As it is, valuable services to needy people are being curtailed and valuable employees are being asked to take cuts in pay, thus reducing their spending power and ability to pay bills.
Finally, how many upper-echelon state government officials have offered to reduce their own paychecks?

"Nevada could collect a substantial amount of money by introducing a lottery."
Lord Rogers predicts that a state lottery would only net $20 million to the state. That would not include the reduction in loss of revenue from gaming taxes or sales taxes due to people using their gaming dollars or everyday purchase dollars to buy lottery tickets instead.
My guess that no new net gain in jobs would occur either. Instead of wasting money on gambling people would be wasting money on lottery tickets. The job gains would be offset by job losses.
