LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
For Israel to survive, it must fight back
Mon, Jan 12, 2009 (2:05 a.m.)
Regarding commentaries published lately in the Las Vegas Sun about the recent conflict in the Middle East:
There is a huge culture clash between nations such as Israel, which base their societies on reason, intellect, liberty and industriousness, and those who live in the darkness of ignorance and poverty. When placed in close proximity, these differences, fueled by hatred, create a death clash.
It defies reason. It cannot be explained rationally. There is, in my opinion, so much division between these two types of societies that reaching common ground under these circumstances is not possible. That is the reason a double standard is imposed on Israel.
Notwithstanding the illogical nature of it, more is expected of Israel by the international community than Israel is capable of delivering. The other side has no desire to reach a peace.
Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are unwavering enemies of Israel that seek its elimination. There is only one way out for Israel under the present circumstances — it must fight to survive.
Proportionality has no place in the discourse. Israel, the attacked, must reply with overwhelming force or face extinction. The longer Israel spends negotiating with terrorists such as Hamas and Hezbollah, its enemies gain more strength in the lulls that characterize these conflicts.

At first, I was very worried about Obama because he had so many close anti-Israel friends.
But I am confident that he will join in with Reid and Pelosi and be united 100% in supporting Israel despite the significant, perhaps majority, anti-Israel feelings in the Democratic party.
"...anti-Israel feelings in the Democratic party."
That mischaracterizes the sentiment. Like "pro-abortion" versus "pro-choice". Nobody is pro abortion.
Wanting the Palestinians not to be slaughtered does not make one anti-Israel. Wanting accord and lasting peace between Israel and the Arab nations does not make one anti-Israel. Having compassion for for one side does not mean you hate the other.
No, in the starkly black-and-white world of some commenters, if you support someone 90% of the time, you do not support them ALL of the time, and are now "against" them.
It's a dangerously simplistic view of the world and political policy.
