LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Bush not at fault for all of nation’s ills
Mon, Jan 12, 2009 (2:03 a.m.)
I am not a big fan of President George W. Bush and his performance as president, but I think Steve Metz’s Friday letter to the editor, headlined “Bush can’t spin his way out of serious failings,” was off base in parts.
First, the 9/11 attacks were years in the making. Remember the World Trade Center attacks of 1993? President Clinton had several opportunities to take Osama bin Laden into custody in the 1990s and his administration failed to do so.
Although the “presidential briefing” of Aug. 6, 2001, stated that bin Laden would strike the United States, it is unreasonable to expect anyone to know exactly where and when. The 9/11 attack was a years-long systematic failure of government.
Second, as far as Hurricane Katrina is concerned, why is Mr. Metz not pointing any fingers at the New Orleans mayor or the Louisiana governor at the time for their failure to use city and state resources to evacuate residents of the city in a timely manner?
After all, there were several days of weather warnings issued as to the severity of the storm. President Bush should not take the entire blame.
Third, the economic collapse has many to blame, President Bush included, as the SEC chairman and other government officials failed to oversee their respective areas of authority. However, Mr. Metz should look to Congress for the bulk of the blame for its constant meddling in the workings of our economic system and for its overspending.
To his credit, Bush had warned for several years of the impending housing crisis but was ignored by Democrats in Congress.
I will concede that the Iraq war and its repercussions are totally on the shoulders of President Bush. Unfortunately, it is our fighting men and women and their families who are shouldering the entire burden and who should take all the credit for the advancements that have been made there ... regardless of what the U.S. and world media would have us believe. God bless them!

If you are not outraged at the Bush regime you haven't been paying attention. He had a huge role in nearly destroying this country in the last 8 years.
Totally agree with Mr. Maloof. This is an accurate depiction of the matter, whether Bush haters like it or not. The president's stand against terrorism and his response to 9/11 were hallmarks of his administration. During the Clinton administration there was a massive implosion of the tech market when millions lost every dime they had , corporate failures like ENRON, Adelphia and executive scandals rocked the nation, and we survived the entire greedy mess, and Clinton's term ending gift to Bush was a recession. Sound familiar?
"After all, there were several days of weather warnings issued as to the severity of the storm. President Bush should not take the entire blame."
For how many instances can this statement be made? For the 9/11 attacks? For our financial situation? About the likely outcome of attacking Iraq?
I do not find it ironic in the least that Bush's record as president mimics his entire career. Failure after failure, always bailed out by his rich family and friends. Sound familiar?
As for Katrina, FEMA was a massive failure. It was mismanaged by an incompetent and disinterested man. That man was appointed by Bush. And like Bush, he was more interested in wearing the right tie than preparing for any disasters.
Failure after failure? There has not been a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11/01 and for that we owe President Bush. Of course, his haters will never grant him even that.
Good riddance to idiot bush is all I can say - can't wait!
All I can say is "to each their own". I'm comfortable in the fact that 75% of our nation agrees, BUSH FAILED!!
A poll of historians by History News Network found that 98% of historians say Bush FAILED!! 61% say he is the "worst president ever" Check it out here http://hnn.us/articles/48916.html
How quickly Our_Linn forgets the five Americans murdered and the 17 who became gravely ill by the bioweapon anthrax after 9/11/01.
I guess that wasn't a "terrorist attack."
And, yet again, the Bush apologists invoke Clinton's name. Surely Bush's leadership failures are all Bill Clinton's fault.
Gordon - I agree with all those numbers. This idiot has made us the laughing stock of the world. Thank goodness for Clinton - if not for him what would bush do for an excuse - he should be the poster child for drugs and alcohol - forget the egg - just show bush's face - all will get the message.
Bush failed.
Clinton failed.
Both men did some good.
Both men failed a lot too.
Only 8 more days for the Bush haters.
Bush approval 19-25%
Clinton approval 65-75%
"Only 8 more days for the Bush haters." This coming from a guy who still blames Clinton in Bush's 8th year. I guarantee I will not be blaming Bush in Obama's 8th year.
One other note, notice how 25% approve of Bush and 25% disapprove of Clinton. These are the same people.
Gordon "25% approve of Bush and 25% disapprove of Clinton"
Very astute observation. I believe you are correct.
I will not be blaming Bush in Obama's 8th year.
Not true your laying to ground work now
Reagan had a great approval rating. I guess that means Gordon and John must think that he was a great president because of their approval rating theory that they are presenting.
Did not Truman have a bad approval rating? I guess that means he sucked.
How about LBJ? So true for LBJ....he sucked too.
How about Jimmmmmmmy Carter?..... no questions...he sucked.
Clinton approvals ratings were soooo good that Gore easily won election.
I hope that we will not be blaming Bush in Obama's 8th year. I hope in 8 years we will hear whining what the next Republican president did in his 4 years.
Jim, I'm going to start calling you Polish if you don't stop pushing me to one polarity or another.
Reagan was a good governor. Reagan was the better choice for President than...ugh!...Mondale.
Jimmy Carter? Whose that? Oh, you mean that great philanthropist and terrible president? Yes, we agree. Nice man. Wrong one for that job.
I hope in 8 years we are all much better off, no matter who is running the country. Don't care a lot beyond that. I can vote for both sides or a new side too (if viable!).
You can't blame Georgie for anything.
People misunderestimated him - he said so himself.
Actually Nance here are my grades for the presidents you mentioned (plus Nixon and Ford).
Nixon - D : Would have been a B without Watergate
Ford - B - Nixon Pardon
Carter - C : would have been a B without the rescue fiasco
Reagan - A : 1st term, C second term (Iran Contras)
H.W. Bush - B : No complaints here, a great leader, and a great man. He served his country with honor his entire adult life. Not an A only because he made W.
Clinton - A
W. Bush - F : Incompetence at it's best, a complete failure, I struggle to find something positive. However I do not hate the man, I'm sure I'd enjoy a Sunday BBQ, a beer, and football/baseball game with him. But I would never entrust him to anything important to me.

jfnance32, are you paid to spout nonsense?
Clinton gets a big fat F in my book.
Clinton let terrorists sneak into our country and take flight lessons.
Clinton let an army of terrorists grow, grow and grow in Afghanistan and who refused to kill Bin Laden when he had several chances, too.
If did something about the first 2 items than there would have been no 9/11.
Clinton made things worse between Israel and their enemies.
Clinton had 8 years to get Iraq to fess up about their WMD's and get them to explain how that they destroyed them. He failed.
Clinton sign into law financial deregulation bills of which we are suffering the results of now.
Clinton started this insane sub-prime push.
He placed heavy pressures on lending instituations to reduce lending standards so that every Tom, Dick and Jane could get a sub-prime loan.
He appoint dumb people to the FRB who made interest rates super super low during Bush term.
He did very little for this country. He rode the internet boom and had little to do about that. The Republican Congress passed all those balance budgets. He did kick people off welfare. That is good. I am mixed about NAFTA. Not sure if that really did any good.
