HOCKEY:

Wranglers pull out overtime victory

The Las Vegas Wranglers finally broke the .500 mark for the first time all season thanks to overtime heroics by veteran winger Peter Ferraro.

Ferraro buried a one timer from Chris Neiszner just 48 seconds into the extra frame to ground the Utah Grizzlies 3-2 Friday night in front of 3,047 fans at the E-Center.

The Wranglers (15-14-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Jason Dest (2) in the first period and Neiszner (12) in the second. Las Vegas held that two-goal advantage for most of the game Utah's Mike Walsh scored with 5:24 remaining in the contest.

Victory seemed eminent when the Grizzlies pulled goalie Mike Mole to add an extra skater. The risky move paid off as Tim Verbeek scored with 45 seconds left in the game to force overtime.

Wranglers' goalie Kevin Lalande made 31 saves and improved to 4-4-1 on the season.

Las Vegas will battle Utah again Saturday night at the E-Center at 6:05 p.m.
