Lawsuit seeks to block Drexel’s West Coast campus
Fri, Jan 9, 2009 (1:27 p.m.)
The Sierra Club is suing to overturn a local government plan that would allow Philadelphia-based Drexel University to open a campus in a Sacramento suburb.
The lawsuit says Placer County supervisors broke environmental laws when they agreed to let developers donate land west of Roseville to the university.
The suit, which was filed Thursday, says development would harm vernal pools, farm land and air quality, as well as add to urban sprawl and traffic congestion.
County Counsel Anthony La Bouff says supervisors acted properly.
About 600 acres would be used for the university, which would be a satellite campus for the private, four-year institution.
The rest of the land would be sold for a 3,000-home subdivision, shopping centers and parks.
