Gamboa overcomes knockdown to defeat Gonzalez

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 (9:39 p.m.)

Undefeated and world-ranked Yuriorkis Gamboa overcame a knockdown and beat Roger Gonzalez by technical knockout in the 10th and final round of their main event Friday night at Buffalo Bill's Resort and Casino.

Gamboa, 13-0 with 11 knockouts and ranked No. 2 by World Boxing Council, used extraordinarily quick combinations from the beginning of the third round to relentlessly batter Gonzalez.

The 27-year-old Gamboa, a gold medalist for Cuba at the 2004 Athens Olympics, began his assault after hitting the deck during the second round, more from being off balance than from any punch landed by Gonzalez.

Referee Robert Byrd halted the one-sided bout with 48 seconds remaining after Gonzalez sustained a barrage of head-snapping blows.

Gamboa led 89-82 on one judge's scorecard and 89-83 on the other two judges' cards through nine rounds.

The 30-year-old Gonzalez is 27-3 with 18 knockouts.
