A detailed checklist for the new year

This is a good time to check and make sure your affairs are in order. I've included a list of some of the most common tasks that we neglect or forget to do. They are arranged in no particular order. Go through the list, check anything you need to do and then do it. Don't put it off!

Important papers: Gather all important papers and put them in a safe place. Then advise whoever might need to know where that place is. Make a copy of each to put in your safety deposit box.

Safety deposit box: Do you know what's in yours? Go and make a list of everything in the box and date it. Leave a copy in the safety deposit box and keep a copy at home.

Advance medical directive: It is very important that you put in writing what your wishes are in case of serious illness or accident. Forms can be found online or in office-supply stores.

Will: Be sure you have a current will that clearly specifies how you want your assets to be distributed among family members and friends. This makes sure your wishes are carried out and prevents infighting among possible heirs.

Funeral: It is nice for loved ones to know what your wishes are regarding a funeral, memorial service, music, cremation or burial, music, etc.

Home mortgage or lease: In our present world, it's a good idea to check on your home mortgage or lease and make sure everything is in order, and that no unpleasant surprises are lurking there, whether you are renting or buying.

Updated information: If you've had a change of address and/or phone number, be sure to let people and companies with whom you do business know or you may miss important information/mail.

Taxes: By the end of January you should have received all tax documents you will need for filing your income tax return for 2008. If you don't, call the employer or other entity to remind them.

Tax records: Make a file folder or a box labeled "IRS" to keep all papers you will need at income tax time, and as you receive them throughout the year, simply put them in that one place. When tax time comes around next year, you'll have everything all in one place.

Planning ahead: Check your home, yards, cars, garage and make a list of replacements or repairs that will need to be done this year, with approximate cost.

Spending plan: Make a list of your regular monthly expenses and a list of your income from all sources. Be sure to include quarterly and annual bills in expenses. Compare the two and you'll know what you can or cannot afford. Be aware of what you are spending, and do not live beyond your means.

Your bounty: Clean out clothes closets, cupboards, drawers and garages. Anything you do not use can be passed on to someone else.

Your time: Sit down alone in a quiet place and evaluate how you spend your time. If you are not pleased with it, make plans to revise it. It helps if you write it down.

Your life: Take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally, and be mindful of the needs of your family.

Your legacy: Live your life in ways that will bless those around you.
