Boulder City grapplers riding wave of confidence

Expanded coverage

There's a confidence around the Boulder City High wrestling room that a state championship is a real possibility.

"Since we came to high school we wanted a state championship and now we think it's within reach," senior Steven Kaposta said.

His confidence comes following the Eagles success at Shadow Ridge's Mustang Stampede on Jan. 10. The team defeated Silverado, Shadow Ridge, Western, Rancho and Foothill — all 4A classification schools — to win the team title.

Boulder City coach Kevin Ruth was pleased with the success but said they cannot dwell on the win.

"It was a great win but we don't want to peak now. We celebrated after we won but we know we have to forget about it. It's only the last two weeks that matter," Ruth said.

Kaposta (152 pounds) went 5-0 at the tournament to lead Boulder City. He pinned all five of his opponents in the first round.

"It felt good. Everyone was on a high. We were on top of the world after the last match," Kaposta said.

The Eagles also won their 3A Southern League meets on Jan. 7, defeating Faith Lutheran 66-14 and Moapa Valley 60-18.

"The kids are healthy and we've got everyone in their weight class," Ruth said.

The junior varsity squad also had team success at the Pahranagat Valley Invitational on Jan. 9. Assistant coach Jim Cox led the team to Alamo where seven of the team's 15 members placed.

Junior Jake Mader (152) led the way with a first place finish in his bracket, while Frank Brown (152) took third in his.

Sophomore Nick Hoffman (130) and Shane Joseph both had fourth place finishes in their brackets. Jessie Cox, senior Matt Causey (189) and junior John Garlinghouse each took fifth as well.

Both Boulder City teams return to the mats Jan. 21 by hosting league duals against Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley.
