Rep. Dean Heller

WASHINGTON -- Nevada Republican Rep. Dean Heller was named to the House Ways and Means Committee today, a powerful tax-writing panel that will be central to this year’s legislative agenda in Congress.

The committee had several openings for Republicans because of the number of members from their party who retired or were defeated at the polls last fall, including former Nevada Republican Rep. Jon Porter.

The announcement this afternoon from the committee says that Heller is among six newly appointed Republicans, who will join nine already on the panel.

Ways and Means deals with issues that will be key for Nevada during the economic downturn – including virtually all forms of tax policy, as well as Social Security and related benefits including Medicare, unemployment and reimbursement funds to the states.

Heller joins Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley, who has served on the panel for two years. Members from the same state but opposing parties are often appointed to balance the committee make-up and share the wealth. The committee is a powerful venue for fundraising because so many industries and interest groups have business before it.

“Our new members bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to the committee,” said Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, the ranking Republican, in a statement announcing the new members.

“The expertise each member brings with them will be a great asset going forward and will be key in promoting a pro-growth, innovative agenda for the American people.”

Heller, a former stock broker, served last session on the Financial Services Committee.

“This assignment allows me to be a more effective advocate for the wise stewardship of taxpayers' dollars,” Heller said in a statement. “Most importantly, Nevada will have a stronger voice in Congress especially as Congress debates healthcare reforms.”
