Letter to the editor:
Burris would serve with integrity
Wed, Jan 7, 2009 (2:06 a.m.)
Is it worth the holier-than-thou stance, taken by Sens. Harry Reid and Dick Durbin, to lose a U.S. Senate seat from Illinois to the Republicans?
There is nothing in the more than 20 years of public service by Roland Burris to the people of Illinois that in any way impinges on his integrity, intelligence or competency and his ability to maintain those qualities under political stress.
Any special election in Illinois would go to a Republican given the anti-Blagojevich attitude there — and it won’t matter how incompetent a person Republicans’ choice for the ballot is.
Senate Democrats are shooting themselves in the foot. Burris is a plus. As a disclaimer, he has been my friend for more than 20 years and a former colleague (counsel to the same law firm). I therefore speak with knowledge, although admittedly biased in his favor.
