NSC names new administrator to improve enrollment

Lee Young has been named Nevada State College's first associate vice provost for enrollment management, a position created to optimize the college's recruitment and retention efforts.

The move was twofold, Nevada State President Fred Maryanski said.

"We think it will help bring in both more students to the college and make sure all our student services programs are student friendly so they stay with us until graduation," he said.

Young brings with him more than 30 years in the education field, most recently serving as associate vice chancellor for enrollment management at North Carolina A&T State University — an 11,000-student school. To create the position, Nevada State is replacing its post of vice provost for the student experience.

"We want to get out and do a better job of letting people know who we are," Young said.

Young hopes to create strategic, data-driven plans to develop more structure in the recruitment programs. Part of that will involve assessing what programs are working and scrapping ones that are not.

He said his previous jobs helped him understand how to run a productive and efficient division. Young went into education believing it was society's great equalizer.

"Having a quality education gives you the options to have a much richer, exciting and fulfilling life," he said.

In leaving his previous post, the Greenville, Miss., native was attracted to the challenge of a new school.

"This is an opportunity most of us don't get a chance to do — be part of helping to develop a school's foundational policies and procedures," Young said. "It's very exciting."

After a week on the job, Young said he is convinced he made the right choice.

"I've met great staff and faculty members and wonderful students," Young said. "This is just the beginning. We have a great, productive, exciting future ahead of us."
