The young girl shot to death while playing with an illegal firearm at her home Wednesday night in the southwest Las Vegas Valley has been identified as 6-year-old Jorden Jackson.

The Clark County coroner’s office said the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

Metro homicide and abuse detectives responded at about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday to the 7400 block of Wine Creek Street, where officers discovered the child suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Police said children had been playing with a firearm in a bedroom when the gun discharged, killing Jackson.

The firearm was bought by the victim’s father, 37-year-old Jevell Jackson, who was prohibited from owning a firearm because of previous felony convictions. Jackson was arrested in connection with being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, one count of felony child abuse with substantial bodily harm and two additional counts of felony child abuse.

The other children in the home have been placed in protective custody pending further investigation.
