Garage fire damages home in northwest valley

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a blaze that damaged a home in the northwest Las Vegas Valley this afternoon.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded at 12:02 p.m. to a home at 2237 La Sombra St., which is near the intersection of Lake Mead and Jones boulevards. Fire department dispatchers had received several calls that the house was on fire.

Firefighters arrived at the home to find flames and thick, black smoke coming from the garage of the one-story home. Two adults and four children inside escaped without injury.

Investigators said the fire started in the garage, although its cause hasn't been determined. An occupant of the house told investigators she saw flames near the dryer. Children playing outside said smoke was seen coming from a vent, investigators said.

Damage to the wood frame and stucco home was estimated at $100,000. The garage was gutted and the interior of the home sustained light smoke damage, firefighters said.
