Letter to the editor:

Seat belt legislation infringes on freedom

Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 | 2:02 a.m.

Once again, money will trump liberty if the proposed change on Nevada’s seat belt law (to make it a primary offense) is approved.

Though use of a seat belt may prevent serious injuries, it has nothing to do with being a good driver. Idiots and impaired drivers will remain the main cause of concern to everyone on the road.

On the other hand, using law enforcement as cash collectors for cities and counties is shameless. Let’s call this what it is: Federal money taken in exchange for yet another step toward less freedom.

Discussion: 2 comments so far…

  1. I cant really read into your letter. Are you against the compulsory use of seat belts or not??

  2. Seat belts as we all know should be mandatory because of the safety they provide, however, as a primary offense? This just opens the door for more people being stopped under the guise of seatbelt checks. This essentially will give more power for illegal stops and the potential for further erosion of our civil liberties regardless of whether it is a privilege or not.
