AAA announces layoffs, six offices to close

Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 | 8:51 p.m.

AAA said today it's closing six offices in the Las Vegas area as part of a campaign to reduce costs.

The insurance company and motorists' club for Northern California, Nevada and Utah said the Las Vegas-area cuts are part of a plan to cut 17 of its 120 branch offices and reduce its workforce by about 250 positions.

Five of the affected branch offices are in Northern California. Eight are in Nevada and four are in Utah.

Besides laying off about 250 people, an additional 50 open jobs will not be filled.

“These are always difficult decisions. Over time, we’ve expanded services available over the phone or through our Web site and more of our customers are choosing those options,” spokeswoman Jenny Mack said in a statement. “We believe it’s necessary to make these changes in order for us to remain competitive long-term.”

The following local offices are closing: South Las Vegas, 8174 S Las Vegas Blvd, Suite 115; Sunrise Mountain, 111 N. Nellis Blvd, Suite 130; Tropicana, 4965 S Fort Apache Rd, Suite 105; North Las Vegas, 5465 Simmons St., Suite 1; Horizon Ridge, 72 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, Suite 135, Henderson; Centennial, 6510 N. Buffalo Drive, Suite 130.
