Vehicle strikes, kills woman crossing street on scooter

Fatal crash

A 78-year-old Las Vegas woman on an electronic scooter was killed Sunday morning when she was struck by a vehicle on Sahara Avenue.

Metro Police responded at 9:46 a.m. to the crash at Sahara's intersection with Maroney Avenue, which is near Maryland Parkway.

Authorities said a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder was westbound in the left of three travel lanes when the pedestrian on a scooter was trying to cross Sahara from the north to the south side of the street. Police said the woman entered the path of the vehicle, the driver wasn't able to stop and the Pathfinder struck the woman.

The woman, who wasn't being identified on Sunday, was taken to Sunrise Hospital, where she later died. The driver of the Pathfinder, Manuel Avila, 48, of Las Vegas, wasn't injured.

This is the ninth traffic fatality so far this year in Metro Police jurisdiction.
