Bank warns against ‘text phishing’ scam

Community Bank of Nevada issued a warning today that bank customers are being targeted by fraudulent text messages in which the perpetrators are trying to obtain sensitive private financial information.

The Las Vegas bank said a text message was sent Friday by an unidentifiable source, disguised as Community Bank of Nevada, as part of the scam.

"We are aware that over the past few weeks several financial institutions and their customers have fallen victim to these types of 'text phishing' scams. At Community Bank of Nevada we have put into place many safeguards to protect our customers’ information. Despite all of our efforts, we still see attempts of fraudulent acts that are absolutely out of our control.

"At this time we are investigating the issue and hope to have it resolved quickly, minimizing any potential damage that may impact our customers," bank Chief Executive Officer Edward Jamison said in a statement.

The text message told recipients that their debit card was suspended and to call either a 1-866 or 1-800 number immediately. Community Bank of Nevada is advising consumers to not call the numbers or give out any personal information.

The bank is working with the Federal Trade Commission on the issue and advises recipients of the text message to call the FTC at 877 382-4357 to file a report.
