Several of the nation's top female high school volleyball players will be in Southern Nevada Feb. 13 to 16 for the 23rd Annual Las Vegas Volleyball Classic.

"For more than two decades now, this tournament has become one of the premiere events for girls volleyball," said Ann Davenport, the tournament's director. "It features the top talent in the country and it's a lot of fun to be involved with."

There will be 443 registered teams playing in four divisions — 18 Open, 18 Club, 17 Open, 17 Club.

Each team starts with three games of pool play, and based on the results, is placed in a second group for another round of pool play. The tournament then goes into bracket play with teams seeded from the results of the second round of pool games.

The tournament features teams from 29 states and two teams from Canada. There are 10 local teams: Club Vegas, Desert Elite, Edge Las Vegas, Molten, Nevada Jrs, Reach High, Silver State Stars, Vegas Heat, Vegas Storm and Vegas Volleyball.

"The top teams in the country are coming here, and we want to show we belong up there," Club Vegas coach Brian Goddard said. "This is a great opportunity to not only see the best teams, but it's a chance for the girls to get looked at by college coaches."

Davenport said nearly 40 college coaches have registered to attend and she expects that number to rise. Some of the schools represented are USC, Florida, Arizona and Notre Dame.

The tournament will include the Unsigned Senior Showcase on Feb. 13 for players who have not signed with a college. They will participate in several drills for evaluation by college coaches.

The International Tennis Centre, 5975 Topaz St., is headquarters for the tourney.
