Nevada PTA traveling to Carson City

The Nevada PTA is inviting parents, college students and community members to join the group on a trip to Carson City to meet with legislators on behalf of education.

The organization has charted a bus that will depart at 10 p.m. Feb. 25 for an overnight trip to the capitol.

The day's itinerary will include breakfast, a meeting with legislators, and an opportunity to sit on the floor of the Nevada Senate and Assembly.

The cost is $60 for PTA members and $75 for non-members.

Students invited to view opera

The Metropolitan Opera is partnering with 10 U.S. school districts, including the Clark County School District, to expose students to the arts.

As part of the program, 90 students and educators from 11 secondary schools were treated to Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Santa Fe Station Theater Feb. 7.

It was the second of four performances the School District students will participate in between now and May 9.

Meadows to offer summer camp expo

The Meadows School will host a summer camp expo from noon to 3 p.m. March 7.

The free and open-to-the-public event will be held in the gym at the school, 8601 Scholar Lane.

More than 40 local and out-of-state camps will be on site to discuss summer camp and activity options.

The event is sponsored by The Meadows School Parent Association.

Scholarship available to graduating seniors

LARS Research Institute, Inc. — a nonprofit company in Las Vegas with a focus of developing, evaluating and implementing drug prevention programs in schools — is offering a scholarship to seniors graduating during the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Neal Lyon High School Drug Prevention Scholarship will be awarded to the student author of the best essay examining the need for drug abuse prevention in the schools.

Essays should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.

The essay should examine the need for school-based drug prevention, how it works and whether current resources in the schools adequately address drug prevention from a young person's point of view.

Entries must be postmarked by March 15. They may be mailed to Weide & Miller, Ltd., 7251 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Suite 350, Las Vegas, NV 89128.

South Point donates ice cream

Roger D. Gehring Elementary School recently held a contest featuring ice cream donated by the South Point as the prize.

A class from each grade level was awarded an ice cream party Jan. 29 for having the most parents sign up for membership in the PTA.

PTA president Maria Moilanen said the South Point Hotel Casino donated four huge tubs of ice cream along with wet-naps for the clean up.

Dawson student takes first in math competition

A student from Alexander Dawson School was awarded first place in the Coral Academy of Science's MathMatters competition held Jan. 31.

Fifth grader Zachary Murdock was awarded a laptop PC for beating the more than 100 other contestants in the competition.

The contest was open to fourth and fifth grade students. Participants had to solve 15 problems in 30 minutes.

All participants were recognized with a certificate.

Scholarships available for youth volunteers

Kohl's department stores is offering nearly $350,000 to more than 2,000 youth ages 6 through 18 who are making a difference in their communities.

To nominate a young volunteer for a Kohl's Kids Who Care scholarship, visit www.kohlskids.com. Nominations are accepted through March 15. Two from each Kohl's store will receive a $50 Kohl's gift card; more than 190 will receive regional scholarships worth $1,000 each toward college; ten national winners will receive $5,000 each for college; and $1,000 will be given to a nonprofit organization on behalf of each of the ten national winners.

St. Viator to host dinner and gala

The 21st Annual St. Viator Foundation Dinner will be held March 29 at the South Point Hotel and Casino, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd.

The annual dinner and gala raises funds to support St. Viator Catholic School.

The theme is "Night of a Million Dreams: and several sponsorship levels are available ranging in price from $1,8000 to $5,000. Individual tickets are also available for $130 and may be purchased during school hours at the school, 4246 S. Eastern Ave.

Las Vegas headliner Clint Holmes will serve as the master of ceremonies and will also perform at the gala.
