A 69-year-old Henderson man was charged Wednesday night with felony driving under the influence after colliding with a Henderson Police Department patrol car and injuring an officer, police said.

The officer was driving a marked Henderson Police Chevrolet Tahoe westbound on Horizon Drive approaching Greenway Road at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Floyd Wayne Hampton was driving a Ford Explorer eastbound on Horizon Drive, police said. Both trucks were approaching the intersection with a green light when Hampton turned left in front of the marked police vehicle, colliding with it, police said.

The officer wasn't pursuing anyone and his emergency lights weren't activated, police said.

The officer was taken to St. Rose Siena Hospital for treatment of a fractured jaw, police said. Hampton was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on Hampton's breath and a blood sample was taken for forensic testing to determine his blood-alcohol level, police said.

Hampton was booked into the Henderson Jail on a felony charge of DUI with substantial bodily harm and failure to yield. The officer was released from the hospital later Wednesday night.
